Alum Flywheel

He said most aluminum flywheel applications are for higher HP cars sqeezing out a few more HP and smaller motors such as the rice burners that like the quick rev sound and that dont have a lot of weight to turn. He told me that if I were to use one for daily use it would almost feel like taking off in second gear all the time. He also said that the bigger motors need some mass on the flywheel to keep the intertia going through out the motor.

 Im sure the carerra GT and lamborghini's have 28 lb flywheels..

I think he kinda has a point that is what i have always been told about alum flywheels is it allows the rpms to drop more between gears which might cause the feel of power loss he was talking about.

OK... I have a question...

I have purchased the Fidanza Aluminum Flywheel (Part# 186481) which is the 11", 8-Bolt for the 4.6L Windsor

NOW.. What freakin Clutch do I go with... I have my heart set on the King Cobra Clutch... however, the FRPP website list like 4 or 5 of them.

These are the part #'s from FRPP that i have been looking at:
M-7560-A302 Mustang HD Kit 10.5"
M-7560-C302N Mustang HD King Cobra Kit 10.5"
M-7560-T46 11" Clutch Kit

I called Fidanza and they said that the Flywheel will take the 10.5" or 11" clutch.. is this true??? Can I use the 10.5" clutch with the 11" Flywheel ??

I am confused on what to purchase and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you would need a 11" clutch if you have the Windsor. I think that you have the 3650 tranny. If thats the case, than Ford does not make a king cobra clutch. The 10.5" clutches that you see are for 96-early01. I could be wrong though.

Here is the problem with the aluminum.

Trying to take off from a stop, there is much less rotating MASS. That means its harder/takes more RPM and throttle input to moe the car because it will bog easier. The heavy stocker helps keep the motor turning and also will help on the launch at the track vs the aluminum.

Think of it like this, you have to drums (50 gal drum design) that free wheel...simularly setup like a bicycle tire.

1 weighes 400 #s (27# flywheel) and the other weighs 200#s (13# flywheel).
Now which is harder to get spinning and would take more "force/HP" to turn? the 400# ofcourse, so that means the lighter one will allow more HP to get to the ground when the flywheel RPM is equal to the clutch RPM (AKA once your moving and in gear)
BUT, once you get them moving...which is easier to stop? The 200# one by quite a bit. That means its less momentum to stop when taking off from a dead start= easier to stall and less forward force while flywheel RPM is matching the clutch RPM. (taking off, power shifting, and anything where your trying to match the flywheel RPM to the clutch) Make sence?

I would go with the 11 inch clutch. you will get moe holding power that way.

Ok.. who in the heck carries an 11" Clutch with a 10 Spline ???? I cant seem to find one.... I also need one under $200.. that is all I have to spend.

The flywheel can take a 10.5" or an 11", from what I have been told. Could I use the 10.5" King Cobra Clutch kit with this flywheel ????

If you can find an 11" clutch for under $200, then please post a link here....

Thanks Again,
