I have a 289 engine and the carburetor is too big for my car. It is in great shape i only started the car once since I have go the car. I am willing to trade for an edelbrock 500 cfm carb.
This may open a can of worms but the tech content is:
Holley 4160 part number 0-3310 has 750 CFM >>>> for a 289! The 4160 with 465 cfm (part number 0-1848-1) is Holley's carb for the small block Ford! This is straight from the Holley catalog http://www.holley.com/data/Catalogs/Avenger Systems&Carburetion.pdf

I know there are many who use larger carbs and "tune" them. Let the fun begin!
Okay i really do have a question now. Could i rejet the carb with smaller jets? Would this help any. I am getting gas in the oil and backfires through the carb. I am also running lean. The timing is right. too.
quit complaining and let the mods do whatever they want, if they choose to do anything at all. with every post you make you helped keep this thread alive.
as for setting the jetting and stuff, i dunno. I dont know anything about carbs really. lol

Your carb is out of tune, or the motor is. Just as is, the 750 isn't so big that it would cause your problems. I've got a 750 like it on the 5.0 in my 89 Ranger. Runs fine, starts fine, zero problems. That said it is too big for the motor if the secondaries would open fully, but they won't. It would run better with a smaller carb, but this is what I had handy and until I run across a good deal on something like a 600, I'll just leave it as is. You simply need to tune the motor and carb to get it running right. Changing jets isn't going to do it, you'll simply lean the mixture out once it's off the idle circuit. You can't make a carb smaller by reducing the jet sizes, it just doesn't work that way.
