Yup...my studs broke (due to what everyone says to be the shop over torqueing the lug nuts, shop says different...I will get to that later)

So I was going down 285 today around 70-75 mile an hour and I hear a SNAP and then see my wheel fly off down the side of the road....(rear driver side)

THANK THE LORD no one got hurt...some nice guys stopped and were able to fetch my wheel (that was another mile down the road)

here are some pics

American Service Station (the last people to touch that wheel) says it is NOT their responsiblity to fix because due to the size of the rear tire and wheel I needed a special bolt from Summitt Racing (part #8176) to be able to run those wheels/tires..now bear in mind I have been running these same wheels and tires for a year and a half...no problems....so we are fighting over that now. But..they are fixing it and we are paying for it...if small claims court is needed..then so be it. I just need my car...it is a DD. Needs a new stud kit/new wheel (which everywhere is out of stock on black bullitts in 17" style, working on maybe getting a set of Roush wheels from a friend in Florida ;) )this special Summit Racing part and new lug nuts and a new rotor. Minus the wheels...250 to fix.........its TOTAL BS!!!!!!!!

glad you're okay!!

lets see.....
1.0 for 5 studs ($70) (studs $10)
new rotor ($45) (labour .5 $35)
refinish rim ($35)
new tip ($30) (estimate) (labour .2 $14 to weld it on)

so it's somewhere in the right range there, for canadian funds...

can't fix rim.....the holes are screwed up

damn bro. thats one of the craziest things ive ever seen/heard of. first of all, glad your ok. that could have been a lot worse. second, you didnt hear any noise or feel any vibration before it happened? third, why havent you contacted a lawyer yet? if the shop was the last party to work on your car and remove that wheel, they are 100% responsible. go back and talk to the owner/president and see what he can do for you as far as taking care of you (loaner car, fix the damage, etc etc). if he is unresponsive (which i assume he is from you saying he denyed it was his fault), then you go to court. make him pay for all damages and try to hit him with an additional sum for pain and suffering or traumatic damage. he will try to settle out of court. really sorry to hear about your misfortune.

are the holes in the rim elongated??? if so that means they DIDNT tighten the lug nuts at all!!!! trust me on this we deal with this stuff everyday. please post up a pic of the rim. overtightening will not cause the studs to break. ask them how do they install new studs. they will tell you, we put a lug nut and a spacer on and tighten it up till the stud is flush. so how could overtightening cause all 4 to break at once. that shop is so full of ****!!!!

good point...

And THATS why i work on my own car...

:nonono: Sorry some asshat messed up your ride man, thats terrible. Hope you sue their asses and win. Looks like u have some bad damage there. Thank god ur gas tank didn't spark up! Yikes...

And i dont think this happened to you, because u said you heard a *snap*. But often new rookie-retarded mechanics put the lug nuts on backwards (shocking, but i've seen it before) and the lug nuts will walk themselves off the studs while driving and the wheel will fall right off. I've never heard of this happening before in my life until i went to tech school, and now i've heard 5 stories of people doing this. Freakin morons....

Man...I wish I could mount my own tires lol :)

That is some crazy stuff man. Glad nobody got hurt! My guess is loose lugs, I would sue ... get a lawyer because your tire size did not cause your rim to fly off! :nonono: Anyway, if you have a pic of your rim, post it. I'd like to see how the holes look :(
