Hello Clutch Gurus!!

I have a 67 Mustang with a 289 and 3 speed. I'm swithching to a Toploader 4 speed. What clutch choices do I have? Can I use an 11" clutch? What would I have to change to use a bigger clutch? Other/better options?
This will be a cruiser with the occasional drag strip flogging. Hopefully it will look and smell something like a Shelby when I'm done!!:D

Thanks y'all!!

Chances are you've got the smaller 157 tooth flywheel, in which case you're limited to at most a 10.5" clutch. But that also depends on your flywheel and what bolt pattern it's got for the pressure plate. Long style plates I think are limited to a 10" clutch ( might be wrong here though) Diaphram plates can go up to 10.5" clutches. To go to a larger than 10.5" clutch, you'd need to go to a 164 tooth flywheel and a larger 164 tooth bell to match. But you can get larger clutch performance with the smaller 10.5 by using a Centerforce dual friction clutch. These come with a diaphram P/Plate and will set you back $350. Just make sure if you choose this route, it will bolt up to your flywheel. And a new flywheel would also be a wise investment while you're at it.

Thanks Dave!:nice:
So if I wanna keep my (probably) current flywheel, I gotta use a 10-10.5 in clutch. But if I wanna use a bigger clutch, I'd have to change the flywheel and the bellhousing. Might just stay where I am....:D

be careful if choosing to change flywheels, i did the same thing as you, and wanted to change to an aluminum flywheel, well after ordering it and taking the trani out, i realized the flywheel i have is balanced with the motor...then its a whole different problem, what i ended up doing was taking that flywheel out and resurfacing it (back to just like new) and then installing the clutch... :nice:

Thanks Matt! Yeah, I think I'll just resurface what I have, throw in the Toploader and go.

Now.....what if I used a 5.0 as a replacement engine? Would I use the same flywheel or use a new one?

My Centerforce 10.5" uses a diaphram pressure plate. With an 82-up 5.0 you'll have to swap flywheels or have yours rebalanced. And if that flywheel's 30 something years old, I'd get a new one. There's a limit as to how far they can be turned down to, just like brake rotors and drums.
