9:DETROIT LOCKER TO NOISEY (HELP)

  • Sponsors (?)

when a detroit locker unlocks, it sounds like you broke something in the rear end, its that loud. and while going around the corner you can hear it ratcheting. the powertrax lock rite is suposed to be quieter than the detroit locker, but i have no experience with them.

you have to remember the detroit locker was originally designed for use in heavy duty trucks, NOT street driven cars. when the racers found that the detroit locker gave them spool like efficiency down the straight, and an essentially open rear end in the corners, they jumped all over them. when shelby installed the locker on the GT-350's, ford dealers got many complaints about the noise, and they were relegated to the option list, and eventually dropped.

Get the tru-trac or a lock-right, they are called soft lockers not just because they make less noise but they engage/disengage smoother too, which might matter in a high speed turn.

Either that or just learn to love your DL, the sound can always be mitigated by a louder exhaust :D

ETA: I would suggest you do NOT get a posi or any other diff that has clutches.

Yeah they are noisy, but you can be sure that you have complets posi when going straight, If oyu want quiter youll have to change to a lsd, like others have said. I think it sounds kinda mean when you go around a corner and hear it ratcheting, IMO:D

They are supposed to sound like a roller coaster, if you've ever been on a roller coaster it makes a loud clunking sound as it pulls you to the top, lockers sound the same way, or at least mine does

I think it's funny because I'll pull into car shows and people will be telling me there's something wrong or my rear's making a strange noise and I have to explain to them what's going on.
