Changing headunit in a 95.

I'm a huge music fan and i'm tired of the radio casette head unit.
I would just buy a cheapo mp3 cd player so I can listen to my ****s... But, some friends told me it's a real PITA to change only the headunit because of the weird wirings and stuff, is it true ? Anyone only changed the headunit ?

i think a child could change the radio. The hardest pard is getting it out w/out the tools. Don't try to use hangers or screw drivers, just go to a install shop and ask them to take it out for you or buy the tools(hard to find at least by me). If you jam stuff into the holes to get it out, your going to damage the clips and even with the tool it would be hard to get out. Buy a wiring harness, it may be max 15 bucks, also wire crimps and a crimping tool(they probly come in a set from pep boys).

Just splice up the wires and plug up the harness and push the radio in. you don't even need a dash kit, because our cars a have a single din slot already.

well mine was not exactly that easy. with all the factory amps you need another harness, essentially a gain adjuster, and pray to god that works....mine didn't. so i ended up running all new speaker wire and speakers and an amp for the hell of it.

it is really easy, i could not however get the stock headunit out, so i went to circuit city and they took it out for free.

How about this...I just yanked all my Mach460 stuff the head unit the amps and the speakers. I"ll sell you my CD head unit. Easy swap??

I put in a nice Alpine head unit and still use the Mach 460 amps and everything else. Just needed the harness and a head unit with 4V pre-outs.

I tried a lower cost Alpine HU that didn't have 4V pre-outs and I got static in all the speakers big time. Couldn't use the radio or CD at all.

Now my stereo has a clearer sound and a little more bass. However, down the road I'll have a local shop put in a custom system and be done with it.

I used the Pioneer dph-7000mp with an aftermarket harness kit and it slide right in. Works great with the mach460 system. But since you have a GTS you don't have to worry about stock amps and what not.

Oh, so only the Mach 460 sound system is a PITA to play with, regular one is fairlye easy?

It's only difficult if you have the Mach460 system. If it's non-Mach, then you can do it simply with a $12 harness adapter.

Correct the mach460 is set-up so you cann't add aftermarket speakers with out "jumping" the stock amps. You have non of the problems mach460 owners would deal with. You litterally have a plug and play system to work with. All you need is harness adapters and you can run a complete aftermarket radio/speaker system while still using all the factory wires. Plug and play....

my 95 was the easiest to install a cd player in just make a tool with 2pcs of coat hanger and bend them in a U and clean the ends of them and stick them in the 4 holes and pull the radio out. Buy a install harness for like $10 and wire it to the new deck and plug the two plugs to the two plugs in the car and the anntena cable and if you are running an aftermarket amp hook up the RCA cables ant the power remote (12 volt switch power) and slide the new deck in.

I don't see where you would have a problem if you only have the cassette deck, then it wouldn't be a Mach system.

All you need to do is pull out the old headunit and add any other one (proper size) with a compatable harness

iv had an aftermarket h/u for as long as i can remember on my mach460 system with no prolems. however, in the need for better sound i ripped it all out and replaced everything.

I ordered new unit from crutchfield and adapter for mach 460 and the install was fairly simple. A little wiring for installation of the gain adj and new HU utilize the existing amps.
Call crutchfield, they have all you will need, good luck.

Actually... my 95 came only with the cassette deck, and it's a Mach 460 system. It doesn't have the wiring for the CD player in it at all, but I definitely have (had, it's been removed) a Mach 460.

If you order from crutchfield, even though they charge high prices, they give you the kit to take it out. It would have helped if i actually looked through the parts that i got before i completely destroyed my stock radio. The part they give you is a piece that looks like a U, i cant really describe it

I just did this install and it was easy as pie. Do yourself a favor and purchase the U tools (for removal) for $3.99 at Walmart. I bought the $40 harness with the gain adjustment but the signal kept cutting out so I just bypassed the stupid little gain box and it works fine. I shouldve got a $12 harness all along.
