How many of you have cut your c springs?

I search the site for "cut c springs" and I did get some results. I see where some people are suggesting that you cut them where the dead coil ends. I am just curious how many people have done it and what the ride result was? How much did it drop? Did it drop .5 or a little more? Did it make the car look a little more even? Does anyone have pictures of their cars after they cut the springs? Did you guys paint the ends of the springs before installing them again? I am just curious? Has anyone removed the isolators?

I cut like 2.5 coils off my C springs when i had them ride was okay not smooth as what some like but i bought a sports car not a cadaillac so to each their own with just the dead coil off you'll have a almost level look with a little rake to it so you only way to do it see for yourself after is settles

Yea I mean I dont expect the car to ride like a cadilac. I am just scared I am going to cut too much off of it and then its going to sag in the back but I am think I am going to cut the dead coil of this weekend.

how do u knowhow do u know where the dead coil stops? and what are people cutting it with?

I am going to use the Makita to cut it with the steel cutting wheel. The place where you cut it is just below where it stops at the top. So if you were working your way from the bottom to the top you would cut the second coil just below where the last coil ends.

Honest question here, I'm not trying to be stupid or anything, but...

Are you guys talking about the Ford Racing C-springs? Why would you cut them, instead of just buying springs that lower the car more in the first place? Are you just trying to get them to lower the car more, or is it because of some other issue?

Thanks

The rear springs have a dead coil that is designed to be removed if you want the car on an even keel. Otherwise you can leave it as it is so that you can accomidate slicks....

because of heat, it's just an added protection method so the spring doesnt get too hot

when you heat a spring you're affecting the rate of the coil

Yea I see what you are saying. I mean I am not trying to be hard headed about this but that steel is so thick I dont think it will make a difference besides you just use some kind of lubricant while cutting to keep the temperature down.

I use a cutoff wheel all the time, I cut about quarter way thru then stop, wait for a minute then continue, that way it doesnt get too hot and change the spring rate, You can also use a sawzall. You can also have the car sitting on the ground and take a torch and heat the dead coil until the car sags to where you want it, then do the same to the other side, Its a little harder to get it even but quicker......

Yea the cutoff wheel I think can be used without any problems. I think as you are cutting you just spray some WD-40 and it will cool down the metal.
