Suggestions for my '93 LX

Righto. I got a '93 LX convertible, and I was hoping for some suggestions from you guys.

I want to give it a bit more pep, but I'm not at all trying for some super sport type car. I've rather accepted that I'm not going to beat anything out of the line other than a ricer. (Hehe, fun stories about that) so I've decided to go for more a luxery cruiser type feel for my car. Heh, the only mod that I've got on this thing is a K&N filter.

My car has the burgundy exterior, red interior, and a white top. What I was thinking of doing was getting a black top, the exterior painted black, and do some nice chrome accents. I utterly love that color combination, black exterior, red interior, especially on a convertible.

Now for what I need suggestions for. I rather like the general feel of the stock LX ten hole wheels. The whole luxery type feel, rather than the sporty five spoke ones. I checked in at a local rim/hubcap store, and they said that the only custom wheels that they could find for that wonky 4 hole pattern were cobra replicas, the sporty 5 spokers. What I really want to get for my car are the bicycle spoke style ones. Is there anywhere I could find those for the 4 hole pattern, or should I go with my other thought, and just get my stock LX wheels professionally chromed?

And any input on what you guys think about my grand plan for my car would be most appreciated. Turn my Mustang from an attempted sports car to a sweet cruiser.

Don't waste money on chroming the ten holes. And the Cobra wheels are nice, but tend to be expensive. I recommend the ones I have on my car (''Pony wheels''). They're also five spoke and are and upgrade from the ten holes (one inch bigger).

For a luxury cruiser, I would just recommend some nice shocks/struts to give it a nice smooth ride. If you want to get into it, I would recommend some larger brakes also.

Righto. I did notice that I've got a rather stiff ride. Better cornering, I guess, but as I said, I'm not seeking performance. So new shocks and struts would be good, thanks.

About the wheels, I'm trying to avoid five spoke ones... I'm seeking somethig more like this:

Though if I can't find those that fit the 4 lug pattern, I'd rather get my stock 10 holes chromed than get 5 spokes.

Anyone know where I can find wheels like that for my car?

I also want some nice whitewall tires to complete the look.

Biff, sorry I reread your post and now see you weren't looking for five spokes, my bad. You could try to find similar wheels on e-bay, or try BBS wheels. BBS's are the closest you'll get to something like that but again, they too will be expensive. And I second Asha'man, don't get whitewalls.

But the reason I was wanting something like that and whitewalls is because I'd prefer having more the classic cruiser feel, something somewhat like a '50s style car, almost.

But again, I had thought this forum to be a lot more polite than most mustang forums, please don't prove me wrong.

Well, realize that those wheels with whitewalls tend to be on some type of lowrider that hops as it goes down the street. And are usually driven by ... yeah.
Anyways, a Mustang really won't ever look like a cruiser, plain and simple. If that's what you really want to do I still recommend e-bay.
 
Everyone has their opinions.

I know the look you're trying to acheive and it can be pleasing to the eye. It's funny that the difference between the "British sports car" and "So Cal cruiser" look is whitewalls. As short as the Mustang is, I think you'll end up closer to Brit sporty if you use the wire spokes. Chrome smoothies may be an option.

I know I've seen spokes on Fox Mustangs before, but I was never interested enough to get details.

Try Cragar. I believe they made a spoke wheel. Give me some more time to dig through my crap and I'll see what I can find.
 
Dayton Wheel makes something close to what you're looking for in a 4-lug, direct-bolt design.

It's listed on their website under lowrider wheels and it's called a Rev. Lace Bolt-on. Available in 13-17" diameter, and as close as I believe you're going to get. Everything else I've seen screams "six-fo wit da switches fo da b******s"
 
Allright, so it would be a good idea to nix the whitewalls and the spoke wheels.

So, as a better option, that more fits with the mustang, but isn't extremely sporty I see a lot of people on this board with custom ten hole wheels, where can I find those?
 
I wouldn't say it was a better idea. It just doesn't work for some folks. :) It's your car, so if wires and whitewalls make you happy, then grab a set. If you're concerned with other people's impressions of your ride, then you may be justified in seeking an alternative to your original plan ;)

Custom ten hole wheels? Like modified factory phone dials or something more like a Weld Superlite? You wouldn't happen to have a pic or a link to what you're referring?

Something else to consider is getting rid of the four-lug setup and switching to a 5-lug bolt pattern. Since performance is not a goal, it can be done on the cheap and you'll have about the same or slightly better (depending on the front brake choice) braking than you do now. No exotic parts or fabrication are necessary since you're not looking to hang big rotors up front and switching from drum to disc out back. Your wheel choices expand dramatically when you move to the more common 5 X 4.5" bolt pattern.

If you're dead set on keeping the 4-lug, then your choices are pared down quite a bit. Weld Wheels makes the ultra common drag lites and Super Lites seen on a plethora of Fox Mustangs. I've seen knock-offs of the BBS mesh wheel in 4-lug that looks good (Ronal?, Enkei?)
 
I know that, but there's not much that can be done with a 2.3 N/A Mustang, realistically, to put it on any sort of performance that a Mustang is made for. And I drive it fairly slow, to save on gas. (I commute 60 miles a day, and doing the speed limit gives me about 3 mpg more than if I do what I used to do.)

So instead of trying to eke two, three horsepower here and there, I'm going to go for something that my ride is, from a technical aspect, already quite suited for. Shift the shocks, and I've got quite the nice, smooth riding cruiser, with just enough horsepower to be fun, but still quite good on gas.

My intention wasn't to defile the name of Mustang, (Heck, most enthusiasts would tell you a 4 cylinder mustang already is a defilement), my intention was to spiff my car up in a way that it already fits quite well. You know? Customize a car in a somewhat unique way, though without it being a hedious atrocity.

The input, though, seems to show that it would be thought of as an atrocity.


Heh, please tell me that I'm not nuts for thinking the black exterior/red interior to be an utterly kickass paint job.
 
I saw widened 10-holes once, but cramming 275's onto your stock 2.3 is not exactly conducive to the gas mileage you're looking for.

Good choice on ditching the wirespokes and whitewalls. :nice:

Dude, look at my garage. The wheels on it may be similar to what you're looking for. White walls belong on a woody station wagon but stang's need a sporty tire like nitto or even a basic goodyear. The classic pony wheels never go out of style and they come in different colors white, silver, chrome.
