I have a dilema involving a 99 IRS, opinions are appreciated

Ok, so, a guy I know has a 95 Cobra in which he was swapped a 99 Cobra IRS, he Is looking to put the vehicle back to stock. He wants to know if I would be interested in a straight trade, his IRS and all related parts (driveshaft, exhaust, etc..) for mine. My rear suspension is bone stock and as far as I know this is a bone stock 99 Cobra suspension. Now I know you can get a TA/PHB to do better than an IRS, BUT I had no intentions of paying for a rear suspension upgrade, and nor would I be paying anything for this. I heard the IRS has some wheel hop, but how bad? is it managable. My mods are currently as listed in my sig, and I have no intention of going FI anytime soon, more than likely I will put in a 331 N/A in a few years, but no FI in the near future. So what do you say guys? is this worth it?

Thanks for the help.

There is a reason cobra guys swap from the IRS to the 8.8....

I would stay with what you have. Yeah it would cost you nothing but quite a few hours of work, but I would stay with what I have...

the 99 rear aint bad I drive my 99 Cobra a lot and I get barely any wheel hop if any.

The only thing I know that the IRS Rear including the 03-04 IRS's break if they have a lot of mods. My cobra is stock so I havent encountered anything wrong with it.

the 99 had a 28 spline diff with pencil thin axles.

the 01 had a 31 spline diff with slightly larger axles.

the 03/04 had a 31 spline diff with bigger axles and a support under the front of the center section.

out of all the irs options for us, 99 is the worst.

i have put great thought and research into an irs swap and what it boils down to is too much $$$$$$ to get it right.

My friend just picked up a '99 SVT and it's pretty bad on the straights with any kind of road that isn't smoothe. It handles really well in the corners, and it sticks to the ground like no other doing it, but the wheel hop IMO is bad enough where I would keep my straight axle.

Had a 03 Cobra in my 94Gt for about a year. Handled great, but aside from the IRS it also weighs 100 lbs. more than your 8.8 helping the weight distribution and slowing your car. Also, the building tolerances on our cars are not as exact, meaning you might have to do some creative endineering to get the cradle in place. Lastly, the brake lines on the IRS go down the right side of the car like Ford started in 1996. You will have to fabricate new hard lines to compensate for your center main brake line.
