Charger and Mustang SHARE best muscle car award??

To further clarify the vote, they said that the fans voted for the Charger, while industry people voted for the Mustang.
To me, the industry is a finite amount of people voting, while the "fans" vote stands a greater chance of ballot stuffing.
Also, they didn't say by how big a margin the Charger won.

I'm just glad the Mustang got the recognition it deserved.

We all know the current Charger isn't a muscle car in the true sense of the word and people are stupid so it doesn't bother me.

Well, even with four doors the Charger is lot closer to being a "muscle car" than the Mustang, which is a pony car. In fact, I'm not sure having four doors disqualifies the Charger from being a muscle car. A muscle car is simply a mid-size American sedan with a high performance V8, marketed as such. I don't know that anyone has ever considered a Mustang to be a muscle car.

They were also comparing the Dodge Charger SRT8 and a new Mustang GT... Ofcoarse the SRT8 is faster... Their questionable results would have been in the mustangs favor had they compared a Charger r/t and mustang GT or Charger SRT8 and Shelby GT500!

I agree with you that the Mustang is technically a pony car and not a full-blown muscle car, but I would say that a pony car is basically the little brother of the muscle car. A pony car is generally smaller and has a smaller engine, but both are very similar and appeal to the same market. Plus whenever I have seen something about muscle cars there is always a section about the pony cars, so I would consider them a subset muscle car.

I think it was dumb if they were comparing the SRT8 Charger and the GT since price-wise there is no comparison. I believe the SRT8 model can easily run you around the 40k range while we have paid mid to upper 20k for our cars. I actually like the Charger SRT8 (I have seen one in person and it is pretty bad ass), which is something I can't say for the base, R/T, and Daytona Models, but I don't think it is as good as the new Mustang in any way.

The new Mustang GT is an awesome bang for the buck--no one has anything close for $25k. The only "true" muscle car IMO is the outgoing GTO. I wish they had made the Charger a two door but oh well. The new Challener should be cool (and I'd probably call the Challenger a pony car, too, though it is starting to push it a bit--it's gonna be about as big and heavy and the current Charger).

I agree 100%.

I believe I have heard rumors of a 2-door Charger, but to me that doesn't make sense since they would have both the challenger and charger competing in the same category.

I'd just like to add to that the original muscle cars were full sized sedans, ala the Chevy Impala SS and the Ford Galaxy 500.

Autorox SUCKS... I want the time I spent watching the show back. It was a huge MTV'ish crapfest of nothing worth watching. Every part of the show was playing to the crowd and meaningless. Even the small portions of Mustang GT clips they played were very idiotic. I sat there hoping the show would eventually show something worthwhile but it never materialized. What a waste. Who cares how their votes went. Like the general public knows a good car when they see one... Give me a break.

the charger is the biggest Joke of what a "Muscle car" is. It doesn't even deserve to wear the charger name. Yeah fours door charger, Yeah that is a great idea. I am suprised however that the charger was not a compact hatchback with a 4 cyl that would have been even better :rlaugh: :rlaugh: :rlaugh: . But I don't like the car. Yes I like the idea of a car with good room and four doors (BMW M5 for example) but they should have never called it a charger. It no way reminds me of a Charger.

Nope, "muscle cars" are, by defintion, Mid-Size--ala 1964 Pontiac GTO. Some people will say that the Crysler 300B was the first muscle car (back in 1956). Some will go back earlier. But most give credit to John De Lorean and the 64 GTO for creating all the hype (in 1963 you could order a Max Wedge Plymouth Savoy that would crush the 64 GTO, but there was no big marketing campaign behind it).

Wikipedia has an okay writeup

Drive one and you might change your mind. But I agree about the name--they should have called it a Coronet or Magnum sedan.

My 5.0 is a pony car!!! Now my 06 GT, that thing is a boat compared to my 5.0. I dont think its a pony car anymore.

I think it's pointless to seperate "pony" cars and muscle cars nowadays considering how different the market is. Back when muscle cars were big, there wasn't much competition from foreign automakers so they had to break all the different groups of fast american cars into different groups. Now you have Sti's, evo's, etc. and the mustang, charger and gto. So why put one or two cars into the pony car category and another one or two cars into muscle car category? It makes no sense. A mustang is a muscle car plain and simple and other than people online, I hear no one else refer to them as anything else.

As for the vote, I think the sales numbers speak for themselves as far as who likes the mustang or charger better.

I gotta say of the big 3 US automakers (really the only three) Ford gets crapped on the most!!! Maybe that is why I like them ("never fear the underdog is here!"). With that said I like the look of the Charger but as many feel on this forum it doesn't deserve the name. I do think Chrysler is gonna have an awesome car when the Challenger comes out. The concept pics I saw are truly inspiring especially if you are a Dodge enthusiast. Even the new Camaro has some nice lines (don't care for the front grill though:puke:).

IMO the mustang went back to its roots (or close to it) while Chrysler just whipped a car out that looks similar to all the other auto's they put out and punched the 'charger' logo on it. Yip..diddy..dodaday!! :sarcasm:
