I have just bought my second unit for a 351W and never had any issues with any of them. I bought mine from DUI out of TN. The wire they are talking about is a resistor wire on the ignition switch that limits the voltage going to the distributor (for old points set up). You will need the full 12 volts to run an HEI system.

I have a Davis Unified Ignition, its great very simple to install and very reliable. I have contact information in my shop if you are interested. It will run you around 250 but well worth the monney. They build the ignition to match your cam specs and what have you, and they have great coustomer service. I put one on my 67,and their screeming demon coil kit on the F150, and on the Cobra. I love it.

Have been running my Davis Unified for over 8 years. these guys are great to deal with. I don't care what any body say about MSD, coils , blah blah blah. have you ever let one of those units sit for one or two years, never firing it up. place a battery on it, and cross your fingers and hope it fires. even if itwas brand new equip. when you garaged it. EVERYBODY out there knows what I'm talking about. try a Davis Unified, one and a half years at a body shop. sitting there taking there time, free storage, put a new battery in and fire right up! EVERYTIME!!! still the same unit. changed rotor, cap, and wires. that's it!! have one for my 67 p/u with a 390FE also. Waaay before petronix and msd getting in the hei for ford game.

I have DUI. Issues are:
Stealth intake needed a little clearancing on runner to #1
cylinder.
Limited air cleaner choices: Davis says 13" will work - not in my car. I'm using an 11" K&N with extreme top. It has a raised base of 3/4 inches and hood clearance is only about .100". I will be switching to another ignition so that I can use a drop base air cleaner. Reason: I want to install a carb spacer to help with an off-idle lean condition. All of the carb mods have been done, but there is still a little stumble that I may be able to get rid of with the spacer.
As delivered, the return springs on the DUI were too soft and did not return the mech adv adequately - were replaced with stronger springs and now works fine.
I ditched the vac advance in favor of 16* initial and 36* overall. The motor likes it.
On the plus side:
Perf Dist tech help and customer service are very good.
Dist fires nicely.

Probably not. I corrected my Stealth with just a hand file, so it's no big deal anyway. If I had wanted to clock the distributor differently, wouldn't have had to do anything.
indexed mine to have adjustability for the vaccum advance. run performer rpm intake. curved monte carlo bar. yes, you will have to run a smaller air filter. Ford Racing puts out a smaller round filter assembly. the previous post about stumbling and the spacer? I would get that carb situation fixed. jetting is the correct way to fix a lean rich condition, and correct set up of your carb. don't use a band aid to fix a problem.

hhead: Thanks. The 3-circuit metering block helped quite a lot. I was, in fact, asked if I wanted to jet up. The trade-off was that it would would run rich at lower RPMs, but would help the problem. If the plenums were just a bit larger, I might not have a starvation issue at off-idle, at all. That's why I will try a spacer. This problem seems related to cam timing. If I had a bit smaller cam, all would likely be fine. A switch to a single plane intake would probably do the trick, too, but I am resisting that step. The tuner I am using is very experienced in all types of cars (circle track, drag, street, blah, blah, blah), so I will follow his advice a bit longer. Thanks again for the advice.
