I have two buddies talking smack to each other. The 96 Cobra is stock just Mac catback and BBK cold air with 327 gears. The 92 Gt has Equal length headers,x-pipe and American thunder catback, 355's and BBK cold air. Let me know what you guys think.

What kind of race are we talking here? From stoplight to stop light? Quarter mile?

IMO Cold Air Intakes don't do crap for these cars, because the stock air box is basically a cold air intake itself.

I think the Cobra is gonna rape it personally.

They make 305 HP and 300 TQ I believe, and at the wheels most tend to be around 262-267 HP/TQ.

If the 5.0 is lucky, it's gonna put down about 200-215.

Off the line, the 5.0 might have it, because the modular engines, and 96-98 cobras specifically, need to rev higher to make good power. That's why most guys who buy the 96-98 cobras make a set of 4.10-4.30 gears their first mod.

Dunno, are they both 5-speeds? we need more info.

Yes, both cars have 5spd. Talking about a streetrace, on street tires. Not really sure that the 96 Cobra will rape it. Might be very close. I am not new to this racing game. I am just posting so they can see what people think.

Thanks

I've noticed 96-98 Cobras to be, for the most part, on par with the performance levels of 99-04 GTs (1/4 mile e.t.s), so I wouldn't predict a 5-spd, geared 5.0 with full exhaust gets "raped" (given a decent driver and the fact that this Cobra is basically stock) - even lightly modded 5.0s can quickly narrow the performance gap, so might be a toss up

red89stanggt, I don't think anyone here disputes that the Cobra makes more horsepower in this face-off but we all know there are many more variables involved than peak HP and we're not even sure how long of a race this will be (1/8 or 1/4). The Cobra should have a great upper end pull though once it gets into its powerband and starts using its horsepower advantage, should the 5.0 get out in front early.

We have the 1/4 mile marked off were we mess around. This all started last weekend when we were bored. I have a 94 Cobra(373's,Spec clutch, pullies,headers,x-pipe flowmasters and 1.7 roller rockers) and my buddie has an 96 Cobra with just Mac cat back system. He was talking junk to me about smoken my A$$. The big 4.6 Cobra motor vs 5.0 cobra motor. We went out and lined them up. We did it from a rolling start around 10 mph. He was 1 car ahead on the rolling start. As soon as he nailed it, it was on. By 3rd gear I was reeling him in, said by side. Creaping by him going into 4th. My other friend with the 92GT is now talking trash to him. So now it's on between them. Let me know what you guys think. What does a stock 96-98 Cobra run in the 1/4?

A stock cobra will generally run anywhere from 13.8 to 14.1 depending on conditions.. If launched right it will stay even with the fox off the line untill it hits around 4k rpm, then SEE YA!! My car pulls extremely hard from 3800 to 7.. I think the cobra will take it without breaking a sweat..

If the dude cant drive, he is fubar, I have seen Cobra owners used to older cars that think they only need to shift at like 6000 or so. WTF

Your best bet is to race LINE TO LINE, not "stop until somebody pulls away" because he will probably be going faster than you, even if he is behind you.

It could be a good run if it's from a stop but if the Cobra dude can really drive, he should get away pretty easily if it's a solid 1/4 mile race.

Here are my experiences with these bastages, 96 Cobra with flowmasters and K&N vs 92 LX Hatchback with Edelbrock Performer Intake, pulleys, offroad h, Dynomax Super Turbo Catback, 3.55's from a low roll held the 96 Cobra off from a low roll by about a car into third or fourth gear, cant remember. The 5.0 car was always pretty slow for it's mods too, put down 225 rwhp, nobody knows what the timing was at or anything lol.

Same 92 LX vs a 99 Cobra pretty much stock, was either a dead stop or a first gear roll, cant remember, LX hopped out hard, Cobra started pulling back but was still behind at 100-110ish but was on our bumper about to come by.

Now another instance, 87 GT with mac shortys, prochamber, pro dumps, pulleys, 3.08's, lakewood lift bars, draglites with skinnies and bfg dr's which would DESTROY that 92 LX from a stop, a roll, a 40 roll, reverse, every which way always had big time problems with Cobras that had gears and more mods.

Gears help those peaky powerband Cobras out big time. With this one having stocker gears, it will be closer in the 1/8 until things stretch out, should be interesting!
