Those covers dont look quite right at all, plus I have heard of people having them blow off on the highway ect ect. To apply those covers your going to have to sand down the pits anyway, so you might as well do it right, rather then bandaid the problem.

What did you use to fill the pits in? I'm going to try this. But I might have to fill some of them with a paintable silicone. There pretty deep.

How dark is that tint.....that's about perfect.

I painted my first mustang window sill plates. I removed them and used rattle can paint, I think rustolium flat black. It looked great but would rub off, thats why I asked. I was young then and didnt know about prepping then so ai was curious if sanding it first then painting would work good.

I used some expensive PJ1 Gloss black spray can paint. Goes on nice and smooth unlike most cheap spray paints. I supposed you could fill the pits with something like bondo or silicone or something, but i just sanded mine and sanded mine until the pits were gone. My pits were about as bad as they could get. Only thing about using filler to fill in teh pits is it could crack as the mouldings are made of some type of rubber and expand/contract with heat and cold. Also if you filled the pits in with silicone, I dont think you could sand them down after doing that to get them nice and smooth.

you could use a primer sealer first that stuff will fill in alot in a few coats then sand smooth and paint. That is my plan. Those covers I thought didn't look bad (better than sh-itty trim) but they don't compare to a well preped fix like the pics above.

I have seen people use Red Spot Putty to fill in the pits before painting with trim paint.

I would sand them smooth before primering them. I thought I had mine smooth enough and hit it with a few coats of some flexible primer and I wasnt happy with how it came out(Im fussy about my car like crazy). So I went to town sanding again until they were as smooth as I could possibly get them. I swear those pits drink the paint. Get rid of them totally and the finish turns out much nicer, even if you did plan on using 5 coats of primer first.

Get them super smooth, or as smooth as you can get them before primering/painting them to save yourself from doing it again.

Im no professional with autobody and painting, but if you take your time and do everything properly you will end up with professional results.

I had my 1/4's out about 5 years ago and refinished the rubber then. I used red glazing putty to fill the pits...worked very well. I used flexible primer and flexible satin black, then a flexible clear. Did the same with the molding over the doors. I'd do it this way again for sure, but would NOT recommend removing the windows to do it. The prep is key, as mentioned.

Actually I had a judge at one show comment on how good my 1/4's looked...was a stang guy and did not realize I was infact running molding covers. When installed properly they are really quite nice.

How hard was it to tape off the side mirrors? Did you just outline the tape around the glass part? Also, the little flexible plastics things that are in direct contact with the bottom of the window--did you paint those too? thanks

I painted my mirrors as well when I did them. I taped off all the weatherstripping (flexible plastics) stuff, i did NOT paint them. DO NOT PAINT THOSE unless you want to have paint flaking off them a week later as they are really flexible rubber.

For the mirrors I packed a piece of paper towel in the small opening beside it so i wouldnt get paint on the glass then I taped off all around that. Then just put tape over the reflective mirror part. If you dont paint the mirrors at the same time as the trim they will look odd because they will be a different black them the trim adjacent to it.

Great job on the restoration of the trim! I need to get around to doing mine sometime. I also need to get all the trim painted black again...previous owner painted it all the same color as the car. I prefer black trim, I think it makes the over all look of the car much better.

Why are threads being dragged up from months ago appearing so often now? Who is to blame for this? I cant imagine being so bored as to flip through 20 pages of old news on Stangnet, and bring it back to life.

Why not drag out old threads? It's better to continue an old thread than creating the umteenth thread on the same topic. It's kind of like a sticky in the end. This is a good topic anyway, because I'm getting ready to resto my car and will need the 1/4's re-done.

Blue oval industries provided the 1/4 window covers, I get compliments on the general condition of my cars trim and the covers go unnoticed...that says it all, not being noticed is exactly what you want from them.
