which throwout bearing to use...spec or ford?

ok, so then is it FoMoCo part in a F/M box that you bought at a parts store:rlaugh:

BCA* makes the TOB for Ford:D

*BCA = Bearing Corp of America (used to be Bowers) and they make ALL kinds of bearings
Well obviously BCA makes the bearing, I just thought it was interesting that it has the Ford Part number string stamped on it. The BCA part# is 614014 printed on the box.

I may be wrong. maybe F7ZZ-7548-AA isnt a Ford designation, but its extremely similar to all the other part numbers Ford uses. But I swear thats what the bearing is stamped with straight out the Federal Mogul box.

no, no...... F7ZZ-7548-AA is the Ford TOB part # I just found it funny that its a Ford part # on a part made by BCA in a F/M box sold at O'reillis :rlaugh: just shows how many hands are on a part and each ones gets a cut of the $:D

I know, everybody and their brother makes money off 1 company's part.

Whats funnier is some people probably refuse to buy that "parts store junk" and spend $10 more and wait a week to get the FRPP HD in the mail :D

When I ordered my Mcleod clutch kit from Maximum Motorsport I also ordered the MM TOB. I have no clue what brand it is but I hope I'm hoping it's better than the Ford.

Maximum Motorosport sells the stock OEM TOB. I called and verified.

I'm using a centerforce TOB from Summit but it's too early to tell if it's good (Only got 1K miles on it).

I hear the Timken TOB's are good but Autozone don't sell them anymore. If you can find it, use a Timken.

If Maximum Motorsports sells the OEM Ford TOB, does that mean that when I bought my McLeod clutch kit from them, it came with the OEM TOB? If so, would replacing my squeaky one with yet another Ford TOB solve the problem? Would I just be throwing my money away? This sound is driving me nuts!!

I already tried adjusting the firewall adjuster. I only got a different pedal location for the friction point of the clutch. The chirping sound is the same. It's actually tolerable at idle, but worsens with speed. Deceleration in gear seems to make it chirp even more!!

What's the best solution?:bang:

My McLeod clutch kit from Maximum did not come with any TOB. I had to but it separately. I did not want a ford one so I'm trying out the centerforce.

So youve got a noise whenever you step on the clutch in neutral?

No. It makes noise when I release the pedal (in neutral). The clutch pedal also vibrates pretty badly around 1500-2000 RPMs. As mentioned beofre, it's ALL brand new - just swapped auto the 6-speed last week. I'm getting this checked out tomorrow.

I assume you installed a new pilot bearing when you did the clutch?

I did not do the work myself, but I trust that the mechanic I used installed what he was supposed to. He owns his own speed shop and prefers working on F-bodies and Mustangs. I already took it back to him, and he heard the noise. He told me to try adjusting the firewall adjuster. He also said that TOB noise is typical with these transmissions (I have a TR3650), as well as the 3550 and T-5.

He said he would install another new TOB (not for free, of course), but suspected that I would just be back to see him in another month or two again with the same problem. That's why I'm just looking for a reputable, almost surefire way of fixing this problem. Do you think it might actually be the use of an aftermarket clutch that is the problem (I have McLeod, which is good), or the use of a particular brand of throwout bearing, or is this just a design issue that can't really be permanently fixed?

Guess I'll have to get headers and an O/R h-pipe to mask the sound:rolleyes:

Check the TOB and make sure its not pressed tight up against the clutch, that will cause it to spin all the time. Get a tiny amount of slack between the TOB and the clutch.

If you have feedback in the clutch, it could be your flywheel has too much runout. You can lift up the car and check the clutch fork and see if its going back and forth. New flywheel or resurfaced? Will it do it if the tranny is in gear with the clutch in?

Well sounds like the TOB. Does it go away or quiet down when you step on the clutch?

If it does it when driving in gear, it couldnt be the pilot bearing-the input shaft wouldnt be spinning in it.

Sounds like the TOB was adjusted tight up against the clutch, meaning its spinning 100% of the time, and now its given up the ghost. Not uncommon. Check the adjustment on the clutch cable.

It turns out a couple bolts on the clutch pedal assembly were loose. The TOB is fine...for now. Tranny noise was due to minor clearance issues which were fixed.

My Spec TOB lasted whopping 13 miles!

Man don't even get me started on that whole Spec thing...

Wow, that really sucks! So did you have a Spec clutch also? I know some are very critical of the clutch but I actually like mine. I have about 400 miles on it now. The chatter has decreased greatly and I love how it grabs so hard.

Yes, it does go away when I step on the clutch. If I'm stopped and in neutral, I can apply slight pressure to the clutch pedal to stop the noise. I'm 99% sure it's the throwout bearing.

If the TOB was adjusted tight up against the clutch, what can I do about it? I know little about transmissions/clutches, and didn't do the work myself. You said to check the adjustment on the clutch cable...I have a firewall adjuster and have been trying to find the "sweet spot" using that. Haven't found it yet. I kept turning the adjuster counterclockwise (so that it protrudes farther from the firewall into the engine compartment), which made the clutch travel increase so that the friction point of the clutch now occurs near the top of the clutch pedal travel. Is there too much pressure on the TOB at this setting? Should I have the firewall adjuster turned the other way? Is the noise from the TOB spinning, or vibrating back and forth?

Sorry for all the questions, but thanks a lot for the help!:hail2:

Get the clutch to engage about 3 inch off the floor. The TOB is "supposed" to spin all the time. From what Ive read its designed to ride against the clutch, infact its supposed to have some preload on the pressure plate. You really cant set it to where it stops spinning completely unless you set a large amount of slack in it (ive tried), but it will spin less if youve got a small amount of slack. Chances are the noise is from the TOB spinning. Some people spray lithium grease into the TOB to keep them alive longer...

See if this helps your adjustment: http://www.modernengineuity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=707

No. I couldn't live with the chatter. SO i took it off and replaced it with kingcobra while i replaced TOB. can't be happier
