I've probably had the worst vibration ever in this car and finally 1 of my front u-joints snapped, and unfortunatly broke a piece off the tranny yolk, so i take it to a shop and they tell 235 bucks for new u joints and balancing, so i just told them to throw it away and i took off to pick n pull and got another one for 35 bucks and slapped it on and took her for a drive and the vibration was alll gone!! but then i notice all kind of smoke when i was stopped and looked under the car and it seems to be leaking badly where the ds meets the tranny. Is there some type of seal on the rear of the tranny that could have gone bad or something??! thanks

There is a tailshaft seal that goes back there.. if you werent careful when installing the driveshaft (or you said it came from a junkyard) the tailshaft seal could have gotten cut or it might have been dry rotted.. from what ive read on here, you should get a replacement one from the ford dealer and when you go to put it in, someone on here told me to put a light coat of sealant on the outside of the seal (metal ring) and then put it in to help ensure it doesnt leak as well... im about to do mine soon as well.. so ill be checkin back

Yeah, you probably tore the seal -- you'll want to lube up the yoke and seal when you slip it in the tailshaft housing, through the seal...

That description sounded bad.... :)

Make sure you do that when you put the new seal in and you should be good to go.

I've seen those seals before... Even used one before. It's not a big deal, they seem to work just as well. Not sure what tranny/car year(s) they came on originally. I got mine at NAPA maybe 5 or 6 years ago. It happened to be one of like 4 cross referenced numbers for the T5 and was also the only one he had in stock. I've not seen one since then. Maybe they come off of GM T5s?
