4.6 engine w/ 5 speed in a '70

:D :lol: You're going to need more than brackets:rlaugh: :rlaugh: :rlaugh: you're also going to need a welding machine, cutting torch, a complete Mustang II suspension, plus most of your free time for a couple months, (once you start the swap) Lots of beer for your buddies, a large dose of patience, a good head for electronics........................... am I missing anything else anyone? ...................................guys?...................................?????????????????
 
my dad, who will be helping me with the conversion, builds street rods and has all tools for the job, mig welder, plasma cutter, you name it. were just wondering if we could maybe find a kit, including aftermarket wiring harness

There's no kits I know of, but from the looks of your pics, you don't need one anyway.:nice: You're halfway there now. You just need a donor car. Like maybe a 90's Lincoln Mark VIII? And a nice 4 bbl intake from these folks? www.modularperformance.com And a crank trigger kit for the ignition? :D
 
While it appears that you have the tools for the job, the cost and benefits may be another story. It's been done, so the kitsch factor is gone, and you are stepping back in cubes while spending a lot to do it. Just one guy's opinion...

Not "just one", unless the plans are for 550hp and up I cannot think of a good argument in favor of such a swap unless you want one "just because". If that is the reason then knock yourself out, it is your car and everyone should have their car done the way they want.
 
my70stang... You do not need to put a mustang II in yor car... One thing that sticks out in my head besides fabing motor mounts and custom driveshaft, is to convert to cable clutch. were you thinking 4v or 2v?? If its a newer motor (99+) then you will have to convert to a return style fuel rail. If your a DIY type of guy as far as EFI goes then look into MegaSquirt. There has already been some 4.6 done and they like to use the EDIS for other engines, which the early 4.6 used. People arent too fond of mod motors around here but go for it.
 
I really dont get that point of this swap??? unless your pockets are really deep and are filled with cash its the most useless thing you could ever do to a classic?? whats the point of even calling it a classic anymore?????:nonono:
I say stick witht the old stuff it looks better and you will injoy it much more...
I love it when my mustang shakes and tells me to floor the engine. I drove my friends 01 cobra you cant even hear the dam engine just the supercharger and the exshast, I got no fun out of that car :nonono: He loves sitting in my car and hearing it run. it scares the **** out of him when i rev it hehe :rlaugh:
think agian on your project and make the right choice.....
 
I have owned 3 different 4.6s (2V/3V/4V) and driven them heavilly, I've had two 3V 5.4s too. I am not so much of a detractor of the mod motors as I am inclined to prefer pushrod-power for the classics. Even though a technical argument could be made both ways, to me it is a look, a feel, and a sound to the old iron that the new motors just don't have.
 
i dont know. my 03 cobra is loud, mean, it shakes (solid mounts) and vibrates (ram power grip HD). runs 11s all day long (off the bottle) and i can roll up the windows, crank up the a/c and stereo and drive home.

i dont know why poeple hate mod motors so much. im putting a EFI 5.0 in my 66, if there was room with what im planning on for a 4.6 i would do it.

dont get discouraged. everyone has a opinion but yours is the only one that matters. good luck and keep us updated.
 
hey where in AZ are you at? anything you should know? i would get a lincoln 4v motor on ebay. sometimes you can find them for about $1k with the harness. if you do go that route get one with a aluminum teksid block. pre-obdII and one without the PATS system. ive heard it just makes it easier. If you wanna do with a 5.0L EFI that would be super easy and easier/cheaper to get more power NA or FI. Im doing a 331 stroker and single turbo on mine. Do what you want and what you can afford or think is worth it.

Maybe i am not communicating well...I do NOT hate the mod motors.

I wish they had more displacement considering their size and weight. I also do not like the butchery that needs to be done to a classic to make them fit in.

So the mod motors are fine, there's two of them in my driveway right now, but I am doing a 351W for my classsic.
 
i am with edbert, i dont hate the mod motor, it is a fine motor that can make alot of power. at the same time, to fit a mod motor in an early mustang takes more than just a set of swap headers, and mounts. even in the 67-70 mustangs, while you dont need to remove the shock towers, you do need to notch them, and you do need to make engine and trans mounts. if you plan a blower on the motor, you need to make even more room as that motor is well packed in the engine bay. you may even run into cooling problems with the engine as there will be precious little room for air to leave the engine compartment.

and then we get to the electronics. you almost need to be an electrical engineer to wire the motor. you have to know what you can and cannot eliminate in the wiring harness, and if you eliminate the wrong thing the engine will run like crap. sorry but the time and money that wil go into this swap isnt worth the effort, especially when you can build a 351w and bolt it in for far less money. if you have a mod motor, and want to put it into something that wont be as big a pain, find yourself a 53-56 F100 and put that mod motor in there. since you will likely install a mustang ll front suspension anyway, it becomes a natural swap, and you have a vehicle that is somewhat unique, and still very usable as well.
 
Agree with above. I think mod motors are great for their intended application. I think the bennies are nil and the expense is great when swapping into a classic chassis.

I built a 393 for about $3500 and am making about 425 flywheel hp. The guy I carpool every day wishes he could swap out his Cobra mod motor and have mine.
 
Yes sir. much more fun to drive a old 8 banger..
Put a nice 351c cj into it and watch the people get around it..
the first time i started my car with the 302 people heard me from down the street and walked to my house to see whats up?? (aka really quite place:nice: ) i got soo many aww's and oooOOOoo's:flag: i cant even count..
Try that with a 4.6l engine your not going to get anything but quite revs??
