I'm going to buy Ford Racing 3.73 gears and I wanted to know what i ned to have my mechanic install them and so the speedo will be right with the gear. What tooth and everything do i need.

It's a 90 Mustang GT with Stock T-5 Manual Transmission.

I guess it all depends what exact year your t-5 was built in. If the car was built in 1990 and it has a 8 tooth tranny gear then you need a 23 tooth gear for the 3.73's. the speedo won't be completely accurate but it will be close. if it is a 1989 tranny then you will need a 21 tooth gear for 3.73 because the drive tooth in the tranny is a 7 tooth drive. The best thing to do is get the number off your tranny and do a google search with it to determine what gear it has in it for the speedo the 7 or 8 tooth.

Rear ends are a job I pay to have done

PIITB experts?

Yeah I second that though, seriously. I've rebuilt engines on my own and a transmission but for some reason the 8.8 rear-end scares me (I've done a 9 inch before)... I fear loosing an axle or something lol

Where is the number on the tranny?

Look in your driver door jam. There should be a sticker with a bunch of letters and number on that. Write down the ones with the trans code above it and go to this website: www.mustanggt.org Put in the tranny information into the door tag decoder and it'll tell you what year trans you have.

Now if you really want to change the internal drive gear of your manual tranny you can match it according to the table below. Be aware that the 6 tooth will offer the most combos for numerically higher gear ratios and offer the greatest degree of accuracy. The 6 tooth gear selection table for a manual tranny is the first in the page.

I just bought a new set of Richmond 3.73s from a guy (with installation kit) and they have a video showing how to do the install. The install of the gears doesn't look too difficult if you have the right tools. It's just the rebuild of the traction lock that I have no clue about. I might try to install my gears myself, but I'm not sure yet. Still some parts to get for it first.

Thanks for the extremely helpful reply. One question why do i need the master bearing kit?

this is a list of what the master bearing kit contains
FRONT & REAR PINION BEARINGS
PINION SEAL
CARRIER BEARINGS
GEAR MARKING COMPOUND
CRUSH SLEEVE
PINION NUT
BRUSH
LOCTITE AND COVER GASKET OR RTV
RING GEAR BOLTS
PINION SHIMS
CARRIER SHIMS

this is all needed to do a proper install (rebuild) it allows you to replace all of the bearings and seals within your axle housing and it also contains a new crush sleeve and pinion nut which has to be replaced. ands new shims to adjust new gears properly, new ring bolts which its a good idea to replace these and gaskets loktite for ring gear bolts brush and gear marking compound to check gear pattern after installation....

Is it a shop? All i did was bring my gears, bearing kit, axle bearings, and trac lock rebuild. He got the fluid and put the speedo gear in for free. Install all that only cost $250. always have extra money when you take your car to a shop though, gear instal only cost 250 but I came out that day spending an unexpected 700 bucks.
