Why I LOVE real estate !!!

Not to rain on your parade but $30K in 9 years in not a good investment. Here in SE PA I made $25/yr on a 1,800 townhouse, bought for $151K in 2001, sold for $250 in 2005. Market is nuts here....an apartment costs ya $250K. I estimate that we've made $30K on our house (3200 sq ft) last year alone....just nuts.

My father bought an industrial building for $995K in 2002, appraised today for $1,750,000

Congrats though!

It is for down here. everything up north and out west is 2-3 times more expensive than down here. Thats great that you guys made all that money, but consider people living in apartments or that have rented for years.. they make nothing... so all i did was live in a house for 8 years, and i made 30 grand.. yeah, thats a good investment to me. :nice:

I built my house in 99 for 125k, 1600 sq ft rambler, just finished the basement (full) making it 3200 total sq ft. Its worth about 260 now. But the house I want to build will cost me around 320k even building it myself (I am a home builder)

i wanna cry...like 1986Stang said, NJ prices are NUTS. i am really wondering how on earth i am ever going to be able to get out living on my own...even a cheap-ass tiny 1 bedroom apartment here in my rural area is $750 plus utilities. thats rough stuff

i dont even think there are houses in nj for under like 200k anymore unless you wanna live under someones deck or in their shed  And bergan county is even worse! You cant find a house for under almost 400k there! :jaw:

I hear ya. I live in metro Boston, which is the third most OVERPRICED housing market second to LA and Hawaii. A dirt cheap rent around here is anything under $1000/month :(

I don't even know how i am going to afford a house. A decent "starter home" is at least $300K in my area and that's for something that needs works. My parents just put their home on the market for $520K and that's considered "cheap" :nonono: They paid $140K for it 14 years ago.

I see the prices of beautiful homes in other parts of the country and i am amazed. I really want to move...but i love my area. :(

Im with all you guys on this one.. I really love my job and the thought of relocating again (i moved to colorado right outa college now im back home) stinks.. Im very serious with my girlfriend, and i really cant do much until she is out of college (she has 2 more years) The only good thing i have been seeing is that the market here in NJ, (i dont know about you guys up in boston or anyting) at least toms river, and freehold the market is coming down. Its a buyers market right now and people putting there houses up are having a hard time selling.. I hope to god this will bring the market down in the next 2 years without driving interest rates through the roof!!

My wife ande I bought our first home, back in '98 for $121,000. sold it 5 years later for $158,000, which was $500 OVER asking price.
[Fast Forward to 2004]
Bought our secong home for $238,000, put $60,000 down on it. And today, just one and a half years later.....They are building my house for $310,000.

Real Estate is CRAZY!!!

The unfortunate part is that if I sell the house to make a huge profit and still want some nice living quarters, I have to pay someone else the same amount for a new house. Needless to say, I'm quite content with waht I have and don't plan on moving. ;)
