I just looked under my car today to find tranny fluid on the garage floor. I got underneath and found it to be leaking out of the shaft attached to the driveshaft. do i have to replace the shaft or is there something in the tranny that would fix that or what are your opinions on what needs to be done or what I should do?

Due to the age of the car/trans, replace the seal first, but if the problem happens again, you have other problems. Auto or manual? Are you sure the leak isn't blowing back from the top where the shifter bolts down? Many people put a new shifter on their car and don't put any sealant there and the trans fluid leaks out.

not to hi jack this but i have the same problem i did replace my shifter with no sealor but i dont see a leak from the top i did just replace the tailshaft seal the is very little play in the output shaft. will there be a trail if im leaking at the shifter

Really doubt it would leak at the shifter, never had anyone I know have that happen, butif the car is stationary and you notice a puddle underneath it i'd throw that out. Don't know if it helps, but when I put the new seal in, didn't get it in right or something cause when I took the driveshaft out and hooked everything back up, haven't had a problem since

^ I had the same problem when I put my new shifter in the 86 GT one time... turns out I was so hard on the tranny I cracked the casing :)

Just jack it up, clean it, drive it, jack it back up and look with a flashlite
