Question for Texans: Personalized plates available here?

Hey all. The title is pretty self-explanatory I think. BUT, for further explanation: My wife and I just moved to Texas for our next duty station here at Ft. Hood, and she bought a new Tiburon. We're thinking custom plates, but I haven't seen a single vehicle yet in Texas with customized plates!! And on the DMV website, there's a small mention of custom plates but they're very vague, and there's certainly no on-line ordering system like there is in California.

Can anyone help? :)

Yes, we have a full gamet of custom plates.

You can have a theme plate...or a plate with a custom saying (6 characters only).

If you go with a theme or organization plate, you're only allowed 5 characters. And if you know what you want to get, run down to the local tax assessors office (not the DPS [DMV]) and politely ask the person behind the desk to check on them for you.

Do I have to mail something or...? How do you go about getting one of those plates? How do I know if my "custom saying" on the plate is taken already??? I hate Texas.

The application is in pdf format. And if you want to know if it's taken, then drop by your local tax assessor's office and ask the kind people behind the desk if your selections are taken.

Since you are at Ft Hood, there are two nearby places for you to check. At the visitor center at the main gate or at the Bell County Annex at 301 Priest Drive in Killeen. They have applications available and should be able to tell you if a selection is available or taken. It's a pretty simple process really. Took about 2 1/2 weeks to get my personalized plates. No reason to hate Texas. Good luck to you.

Thanks for all the replies, folks. I called the Tax Assessor's office for Bell County as recommended and they told me which of my choices were taken and which weren't. Pretty painless. Although I don't see why the service isn't available online like in California. So much easier that way. =)

I don't really hate Texas because of the license plate deal! I hate Texas for many, many more reasons than just that. Mostly that it's not 5 miles away from the Pacific Ocean, way too damn humid, and the cops in Killeen are the most harrassing police force I've ever encountered, to include Orange County peace officers...
