Mach 1 throttlebody & gears????

I was thinking about getting a throttlebody for my Mach 1...
I have heard mixed feelings about it. Has anyone done this
mod? What are your thoughts? What brand?

As for gears. Since I dont think I am going to go with a
s\c what gear is the best for a mach 1? I hear 3:73...
what about 3:90's?

What else would make good in our N\A motor?
I have done an H-pipe w\o cats. I comp. tunner.
Also a k&n filter...
thanks!!!

Their's a throttlebody thread over at Mach1registry under the "Drivetrain" section. Alot of people having problems with the BBK twin 65mm T.B. and some people with the twin 62's. I was thinking about it, but that thread scared me away.

Okay, a TB should be the last of your worries if you only have the mods you've listed. You have a K&N filter, good start. You also said you had a H-pipe, you got an exhaust? I assume so but if you don't, jump on that. If you have all that, go with headers before you do TB. The stock one is no bottleneck, it works fine.

As for gears, it's all about what you want. 3.73 is probly most popular considering it's most daily driver friendly. If your going N/A and reallyy wanna go all out, then go with the 4.10's. I don't like it because when driving on the street, 1st gear seems almost redundant. It's for strictly race cars...IN MY OPINION (not fact, take it or leave it). 3.73's give better gas mileage than 4.10's and a better daily driver feel. Plus, in comparison to the stock ratio...it's a Huge upgrade =)

Also, have you gotten a short throw shifter? Doesn't put any power to the ground but you have no idea how much time you can lose from long shift throws....

Hope I helped man...puttin all I know out there lol GO MACH 1's!!! I STILL WANT ONE! lol I guess I'll have to settle for my '02 v6 vert :bs:

If your gonna buy gears and are gonna spend the money on labor to get them installed, you might as well make it worth it. Get 3.90's at the minimum, or like most people have the 4.10's, or afew 4.30's. Going from 3.55's to 3.73's does'nt seem worth the effort to even swap gears.

what about gears guys??
I have differing opinions than most on gears but my opinion is really based on what the desires are for what one wants out of their Mach1.

I have had 3.55's, 3.73's, 4.30's and 4.56's in mine and if you're only going for 1/4 mile, don't waste your time on anything but the 4.56's!

If you want a good gear that develops all the power in the first 4 gears throughout the entire power band, than 3.73's are it. Even the Director of Engineering for the Mach1 (Scott Hoag) says the best gear for the Mach1 is a 3.73 for the most overall usable power.

I started with 4.30's thinking I was going 1/4 mile racing only. I found the Mach1 had a lot of RPMs left going through the traps with that ratio so I went to 4.56's. With those gears the Mach1 went through the traps with little left up top which is ideal if you are only concerned with the 1/4 mile.

I read a lot here and other Forums as well and taked in large with Scott Hoag who is now at MRT and decided to go with the 3.73's since I planned to do some Road Course Track Days as well.

I found that when I had 3.55's in order to get to red-line in 4th gear it was a long distance endeavor, with the 4.30's and 4.56's it reached red-line too quickly in 4th but didn't pull all that well in 5th to make up for it, although 5th was way more useful than stock.

Now with the 3.73's the Mach1 pulls strong in 4th right up to red-line which I'd say with that gear you are using the complete power band available as the Mach1 was designed.

As far as 3.90's they are always a good in the middle gear. I find a little problem with that though and that is Ford or FRPP does not offer that ratio. A good gear guy with all the proper Tools can install any ratio but the way Ford sets up their gears, using the Ford Factory Set-up Tools, I know the same pinion shims are used regardless of which "Ford" Gear is being used because of the methods used in Manufacturing.

With that said, if a person is using Fords method for setting up gears with the Ford Set-up Tools, as I do, then I'd only use "Ford" gears but if using a conventional set-up process, like most Shops other than Ford use, than any gear can be used. I say that only because I don't feel all aftermarket gears are manufactured to the same specifications as Ford's gears are and using Ford's set-up process could result in incorrect settings when using other than Ford gears.

now we are talking...
The best advice is from people
who have done it before.
If you guys say that 3:73's offer
a noticable differnce then thats the way
to go. I dont think I will ever hit the drag strip.
I am into the all around street car. Even tho I have
10 points on my recored and I cant get cought thinking
about speeding...
I am more of a Saturday night stoplight to stoplight
person. So i think 3:73's are the ones to go with. So ford has them? Whats the best brand?

As fas as TB... People say its an easy HP bolt on.
I have the stock cat back. With no cats. I like it that way because if I dont want the car to be that loud its not. I hear they used a better cat back on our cars then the GT's so I went that way.
How many people have headers? All I hear about is problems with leaking headers..
So who knows...

I would suggest you go at least 4.10's if you like stoplight action. I would say 4.30's would be even better. With the .62 overdrive you don't have to worry about revs like the old musclecars. with 4.30 gears in overdrive that is still a 2.66 final drive ratio. That is still better than even the most mundane grocery getter of the day wit 2.76 rear gears.

You will be very disappointed with 3.73's

IMHO

DON'T FEAR THE GEAR

If I get them from summit.. Do I need to
get an instulation kit or anything? Or does
it come with what I need? We have 8.8 rear
ends??/?
Depends on the miles you have but I'd say you can get by with the Kit that has the bearings for the pinion and carrier, crush sleeve, seal for the pinion, pinion nut, bolts, shims, etc. An example kit I am speaking of is #RAT-305K from Summit.

If you have very low miles and a person who is very good at removing Pinion Bearings and reinstalling it (although I don't recommend this) the #RAT-105K Kit would work.

Sorry to hijack this thread

How do I start a new thread?

I've owned 5 Stangs over the years (67 fastback, 68 notchback, 68 CS/GT, 1984 SVO and 1990 GT). Been a fan for years. My current cars are a 74 Trans Am 455 (since 1988, stock) and a 84 Celica GT-S (modified).

My question is, I came across a late-gen Mach 1 today with my TA. We raced twice, from about 15 MPH to 80 MPH (yes, roads were clear). Both times I gave the Mach 1 the go, I took him once by a fender, he took me the second time by a fender. Very close. I thought I would spank the Stang. My TA's best is 13.8 @ 102 (coastal conditions) and worst (in 103 degree 20 % humidity) was 14.6 @ 95. All times, of course, actual and uncorrected.

I'm wondering, have any of you guy's run your car at the strip in stock form? What does she do? This Mach 1 really surprised me as I can beat my sister's 98 Vette ( auto) in a roll-on quite handily. Didn't think the Mach 1 would run so strong.

TIA

13.1's?

That's way faster than the magazines say, which typically is 13.8 (corrected) with a manual. I figure an auto would be 2/10 to 3/10 slower.

C5 automatics go 13.5, corrected. I figure 13.5 corrected is close to 13.8 actual. I've never been outgunned on the street by a 5.0 or 4.6. Taken several 320HP Cobras, and 2005/2006 GT's.

Today's Mach 1 was auto-shifted, at least to my ear, so no blown shifts there.

This Stang really surprised me.

BTW, here's my TA, just to let you know I can run 'em...

and

Thanks for the reply. 13.1? I gotta check this out at Fontana in 100 degree heat.

And again, sorry for hijacking the thread, the site still says I can't post new threads.

13.1's -13.2's are few, but I have seen them posted by some Mach owners, so it's not impossible. But generally mid 13's stock 5 speed. Any car mags besides Muscle Mustangs @ Fast Ford's I would'nt pay much attention to as to their 1/4 mile times. Their driver's suck. Nice car though. :nice:

Thanks for the reply, and again, sorry for hijacking the thread.

I'm just interested in what Mach 1 will do. I have the MM&FF issue where they test a Mach 1, Bullit and Cobra. The Mach 1 did record a low 13, corrected of course. I was just surprised because I've never had a late-model Stang run with my TA, which is stock, like the one today. I was very impressed.

I read other posts after responding here, and seems those running 13.0-13.1 were running 1.7 60-foot times. I know 1.7 in an American RWD means, well, typically, slicks, and when you're talking old-muscle, 4-link and who knows what else! I've a buddy that has a STi and he gets 1.7's, with a best of 12.9 (modified, cold air intake, front mounted intercooler, cat-back plus cat-bypass, etc.). I'm thinking a Stang that can do a 1.7 like an Sti has got to be non-stock.

Anyways, I was bummed, that the Stang and I ran fender-to-fender, and at the same time, impressed. Next time I come across the guy, I'm taking the go instead of waiting for him.

BTW - My dad is a Mustang guy. 78 years old still laying rubber. 68 GT/CS, Edlebrock heads and intake, Demon carb, Isky cam, JBA headers, exhaust, suspension, quick-ratio steering box. 3.4 gears, Detroit Locker, aluminum radiator and A/C compressor, etc., all in a stock looking (P205/70) package with complete decal/stripe kit. Looks creampuff, but runs good. Dyno RW at 254 HP. Can't outgun my 455 though. That's why I'm intersted in what a stock Mach 1 does. With an automatic.

Just wondering if anyone has run their car in stock configuration.

TIA
