Yup. It'll be 302 cubic inches! just like the 'stangs of old. The estimated power from D.S.S. was about 80, and it'll give me a forged bottom end to add a Kenne Bell big bore s/c'er.

BTW, I am new here. I look forward to all the tech to be received about this beast we call the S197.

It is said that stroking these aluminum blocks can cause issues with the cylinder sleeve being worked loose in the block because the piston skirt travels so far below the
cyclinder. This leads to pre-mature wear EXSPECIALLY in a forced induction motor. Stangs of old had an iron block.
 
Well, D.S.S. has two options: Send in your completely unassembled short block, or you can have D.S.S. mill you a short block with the stroker kit assembled. Last I checked, it was about $3,700 for sending in your block, and about $5,500 for a CNC milled short block. Of course, a stroked motor can't be stroked without a longer stroke, so naturally, both options include the pistons, rods, etc. And I believe the website is www.dssracing.com for whoever had been searching google. Naturally I'll be going for the $5,500 option because of the issue that was brought up.
 
What are they all doing to get an 80 HP gain? I don't like Strokers in a mod motor as it has too much stroke stock. Strokers gain low end power but above 3500 - 4000 RPM, a stock displaced motor will make more power than a stroker. I am saying that the stroker will lose power. The SC will like the extra displacement but IMO, a stroker is not the way I would go for more displacement. If you want to add displacement, the 5.0L( 304CI ) Big-Bore is the way to go.

from what i've been told through email communication, the bigger stroke itself gains around 40 and that was with your supplied block, no machining. but their block is machined 0.020 over and that purportedly gains another 30-40 hp. i'm really not sure. but hey, at least it gets me a substantial gain in hp plus adds a forged bottom end. plus i prefer the 3v head over the 4v head. maybe the heads can bolt on to the 5.0 block. if that's the case, then i will take that route. so long as ford racing offers a complete short block sans heads.
 
I agree, go with a bigger bore! Not a longer stroke! Stroker kits are not as good on these MOD motors. Especially if you plan on adding a KenneBell :) As mentioned above, it'll lead to pre-mature wear and failure!

Also, someone above mentioned BBR, I've read numerous bad things about Blow By Racing, you may want to look into all that before any dealings.

I am telling you they are feeding you a line of BS on the stroker. In a N/A application, the stroker will cost you power. With the SC of your choice, you might, and that is a big might gain it back, but you won't gain 80 HP over the 4.6.

Now you can not use the old 5.0L pushrod block, that is a completely different animal. You can have a 4.6 turned into a 5.0 through a Big-Bore. Ford does offer a 5.0 block that will work, and it is a Big-Bore, but the bare block from Ford is $3100.00. The 5.0 Big-Bore has a 3.7" piston compared to a 3.55" piston in a 4.6. You are looking at about an extra $1000.00 to go to a Big-Bore over a built forged motor.

If you are looking at D.S.S's $5500.00 motor, I would definitely contact http://www.modularperformance.com and price out a Big-Bore from them. It won't include any heads, but your stock heads will bolt on and you will seen HP gains right away.
 
well, i was talking about the modular 5 liter. the modualr perf. stroker sounds like a good choice too. bringing up your argument is making me rethink some of my decisions. i'll still look into it. but like i said, i was wondering if the 3v head will fit on the 4v 5.0 liter mod motor.

The 4.6 3V block in your car is aluminum, and it can be converted into a 5.0L Big-Bore. That is the route I am going to take with my 05 Mustang GT when I am completely finished my 96 TBird 2V project which is powered by a 5.0L Big-Bore 2V.

The 3v heads wont work on that FRPP 5.0 modular motor.
You're best bet is to have your 3v motor bored out to achieve 5 litres. That'll give you more power right away, even n/a. And then, a supercharger will love the extra cubes :D

Plus, you wont be giving up as much durability as with a stroker kit. In fact, the only thing you'd be giving up is cooling efficiency (thinner cylinder walls), but that efficiency can be regained with the FRPP aluminum "race" radiator ;)

Do it with all forged bottom-end and you've got yourself one bad monster! I'm jealous just thinking about it :nice:
 
darn! idk, i think i will go with the big bore block. of course, i really can't send in my block because the stang is just too fun and i couldn't stand being away from it for more than two weeks. so i will be purchasing their block instead. i'll probably either have a local machine shop install the motor or take it to dallas mustang.

Look into vtengines.com also man, I've read a lot of good stuff on them. They've got some nice 3v options. Wish they were closer though!

Me and this guy and several others have been saying the same thing in the 4.6 tech board for a long time.

Big bore IS the way to go, the weak spot of all modular engines is the tiny bore, the tiny bore has many negitive effects including valve shrouding and limiting the size of the valves themselfs. stroking the 4.6 does not address any of the weak spots of a N/A modular engine. Sure it sounds cooler to say you got a stroker but do some reading of the message boards out there and you will find exactly what TGJ posted to be true
 
Man, thank you guys for the insight into this. I contacted Modular Performance, but they replied they will be back monday to answer my question. They're going outta town for either a race or to promote their products. I'll probably go with them since VT seems to be on the expensive side of things. But I am anxious to hear from them. And I just found out about Cervini's Boss body accents. Now I can legitimately(well close to it) call my machine a Boss 302. So I'll be adding that within the next few months/year.
