Alright, here's mine.
I grew up a musclecar fanatic, my dad was always cranking away on something. My own list of rides includes several ballzy classics. But I remember my Dad always saying how if he had the money, which we never did back then, he'd get a brand new 5.0 Stang. Closest we ever got to that was a tan early 80's 6cyl Capri. I personally never got it. Being all of 12 at the time, my attitude was; "the biggest engine you can get is a 302!?! How can they even call that a Mustang?"
But time has a way of changing you. Hell, the first time you hear a 5.0 w/ Flows at full throttle... that has a way of changing you. I was about 14, riding with my dad in mom's 72 Mach1. We're on the highway, and a jet black GT ripped past us like we were standing still!
Fast forward to highschool, early/mid 90s. You know what I'm talking about. The 5.0 was THE car to have. Yeah, couldn't afford one, so I cut my teeth on a 71 Maverick w/ a Boss 302 transplant. About 8 years, and a ton of cars, later I find myself with a 69 Fairlane that I've driven into the ground, a 58 Rambler with no hope, and my driver... a 65 Galaxie with a freshly grenaded motor. What to do? Sell 'em all for quick cash, and find a Stang!
I came very close to getting an '87 5.0 that looked like it had been wrecked and bondoed back together 9 or 10 times. Then I found my car. Sitting at this little mom-n-pop lot was this CLEAN 93 LX... 4cyl. Well, obviously I took it. They wanted $2,900! I set $1,700 cash on the hood, and it was mine. Original paint that still looks awesome to this day!
As time went on, I slowly made improvements here & there. Swapped the ugly-ass Eagle Alloys for a set of Ponys, got the 6pc clearcorners, Cobra R swaybar. But the damn 4cyl kept on chuggin away. At this point, it now had 160K on it, and not one leak, drip, or slightest sign of smoke. And with most of my cash going into other projects, including groundups on a 64 Impala, and a 72 Fastback, I left the little 2.3 alone.
Finally, bout a year ago, this guy says he's got an 88 Lincoln Mark VII sitting in his yard. So I go out and see it. Hideous of course, but the clock shows 75K miles! So I slowly raise the hood and... HO 5.0! Asked how much, he said if it was gone that day, it was free. It was gone that day!
Both cars were in pieces that night, side by side in my garage, with cherry picker between 'em. The swap itself was a breeze. The engine, trans, and exhaust all went in together as a unit. Nobody believes me when I tell them, but I've got the pics to prove it! The wiring proved a bit more challenging. But a week later, my snoozer was finally a screamer. Future plans include a T5 swap, a major susp. upgrade, and a rebuild of the motor. Either a 347 or a 331 kit will go in, depending on if I decide to go turbo or not.
Regardless, she's still my daily driver, just a helluva lot more fun! :SNSign:
