Auto fluid type

I did a search and didn't find the answer that I was looking for, my tranny has about 40,000 miles on it and it's diffucult to tell if it has been changed from the previous owner. I found the Mobil spec 5 tranny fluid is that any good? or should I stick with the Ford stuff?

I going to do a complete drain on the tranny and install a tranny cooler, any other advice that you guy's can give me while i'm doing this. I'm probaly going to get a tranny fluid bath:rolleyes:

Thanks Ram

you have to use a Mercon V approved fluid. the Mobil 1 ATF has just been approved for Mercon V aplications. it is a very good fluid and i use it in both my fords power steering, my mustang's trans and my grand marquis automatic trans.

you will need about 16qts to do everything correctly. make sure you change the filter and consider installing the export 4R70W pan that has a drain plug. it will make future services a lot easier. heres the part number for the pan F8UZ-7A194-AA

Amsoil has had a synthetic ATF meeting Mercon V for many years now.

true, and amsoil is a very good fluid. i just know in my area the Mobil 1 ATF is a lot easier to get my hands on.

the FRPP pan is another option. last time i checked, the iimport pan that is a direct bolt on was about $35 from a dealer.

just remember that the import pan is literally the same size as stock. they used it on domestic U-Haul and most trucks that were imported. that price is just what ive seen, it might be more. the huge advantage to it is the drain plug from the factory.

Thanks for you feedback, I'll get a pan too but nobody mentioned the Ford tranny fluid. Will the Mobil 1 give me any future tranny problems?

If you use a fluid that meets the specs that are required, any fluid, then you should be okay. Once you find the fluids that do, then the choice is which one you feel will do the better job. Synthetics tend to perform better than petroleums, although some synthetics these days are petroleum based. You should be safe with both Amsoil and Mobil 1, both still using a PAO base stock with most of their fluids.
