Anyone else here lift, train MMA?

I used to lift a good amount about a year ago (benching 280 and weighed in at a lean 155lb and 5' 9"). Hit a plateau for a while and then i had to switch up my whole training routine to fit my preparation for OCS. I stopped lifting and starting constantly running and doing ALOT of cardio, doing crunches, and pull-up as well. I lost ALL of my size and today was my 3rd day back at the gym. It felt like a second home when i went back this past Tuesday and plan to get back to my old size and strength while still being able to run a 20 min. 3-mile and keeping my pull-ups and crunches high... This is gonna suck :(

I've been up and down over the years, so I feel your pain.
Good luck on your efforts. If you need any help or advice, just shoot me an e-mail.

Yes I do both, fight competitively in mma.

What styles do you train in, or how to you train?

My goal is do go a year or two through Krav then learn ju-jitsu and start an MMA program (Krav/ju-jitsu based).

I spar once or twice a week lightly. Looking to pick it up a little more. I had to go easy for a while as I stress fractured my leg pretty badly a month ago.

i recently just started training mma, ive been training brazilian ju-jitzu and mui thai. its alot of fun tho (being 16 kinda give me an adreninline rush) i used too train boxing and freestyle wrestling when i was a little younger so i have alot of the basic skills still handy. i also lifted for about 3 yrs, 6ft my best bench max was 326lbs, weighing in at 168. best squat was 532lbs at the same weight.

for awhile i would use creatine pills that you could buy at walmart, it worked great while i was on it. then i just used protein and would lift 6 days of the week

just started back lifting, always get strong.. very strong.. but for some reason never stack on any size.. kinda disapointing, i dont cafe for the stealth look, women dont notice strength immediatly, they notice size. shrug...

i was intereted in getting involved with various arts... however i cant find anything worth a damn in my area. generic karate and tae-kwon-do. I'd love to learn Kempo.

Ive lifted for a few years now, pretty much lost everything i had gained in my left arm when i broke it last year. Its already completely healed and ive been lifting heavy again.
good for you!
yea...injuries are the worst. i lost over 20lbs of muscle immediately after dislocating my shoulder while lifting. worst injury i've ever had...and whats worse is that its permanent. Even after physical therapy...they said surgery wouldnt even fix it for good... genetics suck :nonono:

I actively trained in Goshin Ju-Jitsu and with Green Beret instructors (weapon defense) for about 5 years, also spent that time ground grapling. While I don't attend a school anymore (time constraints) I am on a healthy weight lifting plan, and it helps that my dad is a 3rd degree in Akido and Isshinryu Ryu.

Guess im luckier than all you guys, i used to be a skinny little puss... i was 6'1 about 160-170. i have been lifting almost 4-5 times a week for about a year now taking gobs of protein, testosterone booster (not roids), Multivitamin, Fish Oil, and Creatine. This combo in conjunction with pounding down protein and LOTS of calories boosted my weight to where it is now, 205. So now im 6'1 and 205, theres a HUGE difference in how i look and it doesnt go unnoticed.

For those of you who say you cant gain weight, you need to eat more quality calories and more protein. The formula is simple... if you eat more calories than you burn per day... BAM you gain weight.

Eating was always the biggest problem for me, either i didnt have time or i just wasnt hungry, bottom line is if you want it enough (to get bigger) you will make it work. So i eat. ALOT.

I love MMA. I used to just be a hardcore lifter because I'm over 30 and I thought contact sports where beyond me. Then after I missed my bench and squat marks of 400 and 400 at 5'10 & 194lbs, I met my MMA trainer. I train more strength/endurance than just max numbers. My wrists and shoulders were killing me when I was going all out bench and other lifts and I was getting burnt out. Now I feel better in the morning and MMA made me realize I can still compete in a contact competetive sport. My gym trains just MMA, no specific style, just a mix that works better than one specific style. IMHO. My first fight is a submission fight, no punches or kicks, but it's a good start. I don't know if I'll ever get to no holds barred but I tell myself that I will and I'm training like I am.
If you've never tried it before google search a fight school around you and check it out. It's like therapy. I love it.

I train in Boxing/Muay Thai/wrestling/ and Jiu Jitsu. If you are in a good school you will find that you only take bits and pieces from each style. Krav is not something that I would recommend, not because Im saying it sucks, but how many high level fighters use it? not many

I still weight lift....it's a way of life and not necessarily a "sport" so to speak. Some days, you have to will yourself into the gym when you'd rather be sleeping. I feel that way.

I'm 5'9", current weight is 215. I can fluctate between 205 to 215, depending on how much I run. I train mostly the basic movements, ie squat, flat bench, military press, deadlifts, almost always heavy, usually 3-5 reps max for 3-4 sets per body part. Usually 3-4 exercises per body part.

Right now I'm dealing with a injured labrum (shoulder area, near the rotator cuff), but injuries come with weight lifting and moreso with age. (I'm 37 now). I never "max out" for 1 rep lifts, because there really is no sense other than to have a big ego. At this weight, I probably could get about 375 on the bench (I did 6 sets of bench first exercise other day including warm ups, heaviest weight at 6/5/5 reps @ 315lbs) and probably close to 500 on squat (I did smith machine squats other day, 3/3/3 @ 375 full squats). I can catch over 400 on the deadlift from the ground, so I'm happy with that weight too. I'm happy with my current poundage, and I'm not the "biggest" guy in the gym but I put the majority of the bigger guys to shame :D

I trained Shootfighting for 4 years (instructor was a black belt in Universal Kempo and his uncle was Karl or Carl (sp) Gotch's son-in-law, combination of boxing, wrestling, kempo, jujitsu), and still dabble here and there but can't quite find the time to train again. I still punch/kick the wave bag in the garage though. Also was a high school wrestler, which helps enormously. A good wrestling background is vital to being a good MMA practioner.

6 years of Ju Jitsu and I lift too. I dont go for the monster weights but have been doing it for years. The Ju Jitsu incorporates many Judo type throws, joint locks, chokes, weapons defense and grappling.

I hurt my neck so Im taking a couple of months off

Couldnt agree more!

I just started training in Gracie Ju Jitsu, and Mui Thai about 3 weeks ago. Its amazing how much of a workout it is. I go 3 times a week and am DRIPPING wet within 15-20 mins. Classes are at least 2 hours long except for my 1 on 1 training on Wed ams, that goes for an hour straight. I am really liking it so far. Its a good way to vent over any worries or anything you have going on. I ache like I got beat with a sledge hammer after each session, but hey... that just means Im actually working right :nice:
Maybe after a year or so, I MIGHT try a newbie tourney or something, but I have a lot to learning to do.
Growing up I never did any martial arts, wrestling, or anything, so this is pretty new to me. I have an awesome instructor though, so Im sure Ill get where I need to be quickly.
