starting

First of all, your engine is dragging. Try to jump it off from a newer vehicle and check all the electrical connections to the starter. If it still doesn't crank, put some starting fluid into the carb. Then try to crank again. If it cranks, you have a fuel problem. Make sure to put the air cleaner back on for safety. Basically you would have two problems, you're either not getting gas to the carb or not the correct mix through the carb. If it doesn't crank, it could be timing or electrical. Make sure that the order is right on the HEI distributor. Make sure the plugs and wires are good. Check to see if you're getting spark to the plug. Rarely the module in the distributor can go bad.

The distributor Is bran new I do have a spark comming from the spark plugs and I do have fuel comming to. I belive just like everyone said its the timing order beacuse, I never knew how to get the TDC right. But since I read up some stuff and found out how to do it right hopefully.
Hopefully tomarro I will have it running after 4 long years of not running.:hail2:

Starting Fluid is a No No in gas engines, he's not having gas or spark issues.
for future use just fill the bowl of the carb with gas-o-line...

Ok well today i got out of school at 8:00 pm and the part store closed at 8:00 so i couldn't get the spark plug so i went to Walmart to see if i could find anything. I found some spark plugs then looked at the book because I didnt know the part # the book tells me its a 25 but it looks nothing like it??? I found one that would fit but the sparkplug tip is much longer??

well I am going to go to kragen tomarro to see if i can get it..

Backfiring thru the carb indicates a timing problem. This happen ed to me a few years back and it turned out that when I installed the distributor, I used TDC on the intake stroke, not compression stroke of #1 cylinder. The solution was simple, just removed the distributor and rotated it 180 degrees. Popped back in and started right up. You are almost there, this should take you 10 minutes tops to fix.

#1 is at TDC and rotor is pointing to #1 position on the cap? And this is a non roller cam motor?

I came across this issue, but it ended up being something totally different, different compression heads, ran but ran like dooky, I put a matched set of heads on it and it started and ran perfect, I nearly had to beat my brains in with a valve cover to exorcise the demons of stupidity out.
