rear end bottoms out, dont know why.

I have a 96 gt 5 speed and on hard take offs, (from stand still or moving) there is a hard and loud grinding coming from the rear end. It is the driveshaft actually hitting the undercarriage i can feel it under the seat. i dont know how its doing it. the shocks and springs are fine. i have 275 tires and there being tore up on the upper wheel well .
The car has been lowered 2 inches and i did change the rear bump stop to a smaller one but that shouldnt cause the problem. Of course the problem worsens with passengers. Anyone have an idea what it could be? could it even be engine or transmission mounts?

it's common with lowered cars, you'll bottom out no matter what unless you raise your car back up, using a different bumpstop won't change it either

If you are bottoming out on launches, sounds like weak springs. when you say "lowered" 2 inches, are you referring to a good spring kit, or did you cut coils off? It is a price you pay for dropping but different spring choices should help. what do you have currently?

If the tires are hitting the inside of the wheel well (you mean the very top of it, or the sides?) then its lowered way too much.

If the tires are hitting the fender edge and eating the sidewalls, your wheels are set out too far to be lowered like that. You might be able to fix that by rolling the fenders.

Do you have wheel spacers or aftermarket rims?

I wouldnt think the driveshaft would be scraping or that would be a major concern. I would check to see if the tires were rubbing on the inner fender or outer or something like that.

My exhaust hits the ground if i have 3 others in the car.

Also if you have eibach sportlines the rear may have sagged so much you get rub as well.

lol.. i give the big girls rides in the f-150!...thanks for replying guys..
i do have a spring kit (sportlines), i do have the tires spaced out for stance purposes...and the tires are shredding on the sides.. but my bigger concern is the grinding. i am certain it was the shaft but it could possibly be my exhaust. can any of the control arms go bad and allow for movement back there.

Your exhaust pipes could be hitting the driveshaft. Take a look underneath, youll see very obvious scuff marks and shiny areas where its been hitting.

Your tires are hitting the fenders because of the spacers, remove them and your sidewalls will thank you.

If i think i know what your saying is you have wheel spacers with eibach sportlines with the tires being torn up. You most likely have the fenders rubbing on the tires that is the noise. If that is it get your fenders rolled and it should be fixed.

thanks for all the info guys... the tip about my exhaust hitting the shaft makes sense...thats what ill look for and a pair of new springs.

Get some nice thick urethane isolators. Those should raise you up a bit.
