eliminating voltage regulator

We're running the March Serpentine belt system on our 347 in our '65 coupe. This system uses a GM single wire, internally regulated alternator. Has anyone had experience modifying the harness to eliminate the regulator? If so, what are the mods?

Ugh... it's been 5 years since I did mine.

I think it was just a matter of removing the regulator and capping off the wires.

I actually just put in a one wire alt. last weekend. I unscrewed the voltage regulator and just clipped the wires. I did the same for the old alternator wiring harness. I may figure out how to remove the wires altogether, but for now I just covered the ends in electrical tape.

That's the one I used. It's rated at 140 amps, and I got it in a natural finish because I'm not a huge fan of chrome or polished stuff. Search around Summit and you should be able to find something. Also, it came with directions, but it's pretty simple.

1. Remove belt and old alternator.
2. Put in new alternator with new belt.
3. One wire runs from back of alternator to + terminal on either the battery or starter solenoid.
4. Remove old wiring harness, unless you may want to return to stock.

Easy, simple, looks good, and mines been running great ever since I put it in.

Did you have to make any additional changes to the wiring in the car (beyond removing the external regulator wires) to avoid problems with that large amp alternater?

I just bought my 100 amp 1 wire alternator today and want to make the change ASAP. I'm really excited, and looking forward to getting rid of my charging problems!

i put a power master in my 68 a few years ago and had to put a resistor ( maybe it was a diode?) at the regulator...the instructions came with the alternator...i believe it was so the amp guage still worked...

Did you put a resistor in so you could keep the regulator or did you eliminate the regulator and put a resistor in some where else to protect other wiring?

I did not have to do any changes with any of the existing wiring. It's been about two weeks since the swap, and I haven't been 'surprised!' with a dead battery yet so I guess I managed to do something right... I hope this helps!
