i was thinking of combos i would be interested in int he future. i have always head great about air flow research heads. i am just wondering if the 185s would be too much head for just a 302 and if 165s are the best bet?

i was thinking of afr 165?185?s
good intake, TFS or something
and a tfs stage 2 cam.
how would that run?

afr's would not be too much but from what ive heard they do require you do some machining on the engine. Afr 185's, trickflow or holley intake, and a custom cam would be my dream hci.

I highly recommend the 185 his what I use to have in my car before I had to sell due to a baby at the time.

306 Mexican Block with 9.5 to 1 compression forged pistons with AFR 185 aluminum Heads, Harland Sharp 1.7 Roller Rockers, XE 266 comp cam, 1 5/8 Mac headers, Mac CAI, MSD Blaster coil, MSD Bullet Distributor, MSD 6al, Trick Flow Street intake, Pro M Mass air meter set for 30lb injectors, ford 30lb injectors, 95 Cobra R Computer controlling the car. New Paint, New hood 3 in Cobra R, Cobra Wing, New tint 35% on all windows. 16 Chrome plated 10 spoke wheels, Blackouts Included with the car original turbine wheels, Custom built AOD, Sony xplode cd player. Very fast ran 11.6 in the ¼ mile.

If you still have the aod check my signature link

You will either need to flycut the pistons or have different pistons in the car to clear the radial clearance of the 2.02 intake valves.

Ed Curtis told me that 165's were best for my 302...

+1 for the 185s.

Like mentioned though... you may end up having to cut or replace your current pistons. Not everyone does but there is a high probability that P2V will be an issue.

Get s custom cam. It won't cost you THAT much more in terms of $$ but can make a whole lot of diff in terms of HP.

Impressive!

How high are you revving the motor?

Got any track times or dyno sheets?
its shifted at 6500 n/a and 6200 on the juice, and sry no track times or dyno sheets, i was told by a respectable mustang guru i should make 330-340 rwhp, i dont know, ill be happy if i break 300

:D

Thanks but I had to think what was most important selling the car or diapers, that andI needed to retune the ecu at abot $1000. That and it was atoy car thatI triedto driveback and forth to work with no heat and a discounted ac unit. Being a three car family on a 1pay check was easyer to see it go

Ed told me the 165's for a street car for a more useable powerband...

I was also told to go with the 185's for a more track-oriented car that would shift higher. Since my car was a daily driver...I chose the 165's per his recommendation.

i dont think either are a bad choice. both kick ass heads. but if your gonna build up a 302 h/c/i and dont plan on upping the displacement of the engine, i think the 185 is unnecessary.

185 on a healthy 302 is perfect.
i completly agree after driving this car and riding in a car with afr165s the 185s seemed to pull alot harder after 4500 all the way to the shift point 6500, unlike the 165s acted almost like a stock head they were smooth pulling too about 5500

For all those touting a set of AFR 185 heads as being the best choice...

Unless you have notched the pistons or replaced them with aftermarket, you will not be able to see the benefit of the using right camshaft to maximize the usage of that head. Can't just bolt in a TFS St1 grind and call it a day, just because it fits!

Also...

Why in the world would you put a 280 CFM cylinder head on an EFI manifold that probably only goes to 250 CFM??? The intake now becomes the bottleneck and the benefit of the bigger heads is moot. Those that have the 185 heads on their 302 shortblocks, which intake are you running? How fast/quick are you running? Bet not too many are rocketships without a lot of gear and a good diet!

The benefit of a matched head, cam and intake package is not the "peak" number on a dyno nor for the "approval" of the forum jockies... It's because of the increase in the area under the curve power. The improvement of average power that you can feel and document. So far, no one has given any facts other than a justification for what they are using.

Yes, I'd bolt on a set of AFR 185 heads on a street 306 in a heartbeat. However, everything else "around" those heads would be perfectly matched. From what I see on a lot of forums, most combos are lacking the same amount of attention to the details and why some project fail miserably.

Anyway... Think before you spend!

Ed

thats why i run afr 185s, with a victor jr, and a mighty demon 650....

and your eyes ed of the perfect camshaft might now be the same in someone elses eyes, if my cam isnt fully benifitial i would really love to feel one that was, this one will def put a smile on anyones face
