My fellow Stangers,

I spent many hours tonight searching for engine info on several forums, hopefully someone (Uncle Meat, you seem well versed, got 2 cents?) has all the answers. Is the 4V DOHC Mustang engine the same throughout the 96 to 03 line, with minor improvements along the way? Any and all opinions welcome, please no "my motor will beat your motor" pissing contests.

I'm just curios about the motors history, and was not able to find enough info online. Reason being, I am pulling the Teksid motor out my 99 Cobra. A 03 Mach 1 crate motor is going its place. If I can get the $$$ I want, I will sell the 99 motor. If not, I will rebuild it with FR500 parts and swap it out again down the road. Here is what I heard...

The Mach 1 motor (as I am told) is an improved version of the 99/01 Cobra motor. It uses the same intake manifold as the 99/01 Cobra. It has the same heads found on the 03/04 Cobra. It has 5.4L cams (2 of the 4 anyway), and improved exhaust manifolds. The compression ratio is also greater. True or False? Dare I say it is an aluminum Terminator motor with non-forged internals and no blower?

I see that Ford Racing offers (offered) a "Cobra" crate motor (part #M-6001-C460) with extra stuff I don't need (tranny, computer, harness, ect) and the 03 Mach 1 crate motor (part #M-6007-M146) as direct replacements. Ford Racing's customer help line said the Mach would swap right in, no issues. Anybody done this yet? I figure if the Mach motor is an improved version of mine it only makes sense to buy that one right?

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope...

Keep that Teksid block! Yeah you can sell it pretty easily I'm sure. They are in high demand if in good condition. If I was you I'd keep it and use it for a future build up.

True. Just keep in mind the crank in a Mach 1 motor from a manual transmission car is forged vs cast in the A/T equipped Machs. Everything else you state is what I've always been lead to believe too.

Yes it should swap right in. Personally I like the idea of building up your original Teksid block though.... :D

Thanks UM

The Teksid motor has seen some miles, but still runs well. I am the overly anal type, and as this is my daily driver, I can't afford to keep going in and out of the shop for days at time doing upgrades.

I would really love to upgrade the Teksid to a FR500 replica beast, but parts are pricey and there not many other aftermarket options that I have found. 800 per bare FR500 head, 1600 for cams and valve train kit, 3200 for the intake manifold (I think at this price I would use my spare extrude honed manifold) and I never looked at prices for forged internals! What are you other 99/01 non-stock guys using for your 4V? Like I said, if the price is right, I will (sadly) part with the Teksid and push the Mach motor with bolt ons.

Speaking of which, this is crate motor from Ford Racing, is there a way to tell externally if this has the forged crank for the 5spd?

Thanks again!

In other words that block is "well seasoned". :nice:

I'm would assume so since Ford wouldn't offer a direct replacement that is not at least equal to or better than what came in the Mach to begin with.

Hey cradicg, where in Pennsylvania are you located? I was wanting to join a club or go cruising, but I don't know the best way to meet people. Any input appreciated. Thanks!

I live in the Harrisburg/Lancaster area. Not too far from the MD border. I recently joined the Mustang Club of Central PA http://www.pamustang.org. If you are not already a member of the MCA http://www.mustang.org, they have listings of local chapters. I see there is one in MD, here is their website...

http://www.mustangclubofmd.com/

If you live far from any of the above listed organizations, I would suggest the following....

1. Check magazines (5.0, Muscle Mustangs, Modified Mustangs, ect) for events being held near you. It's the off season so don't get discouraged if not much is going on.

2. Are there any tracks near you? Find their online schedule/calendar for open drag nights, or officially sponsored events. Great way to meet others!

3. Any performance shops (especially Mustang specific) should be able to point you in the right direction.

Don't limit yourself to "Mustang only" choices. You would be amazed at how many Stangs, F-bodies and imports mingle at events. Any body who has invested time/money in producing a quality vehicle, be it show or go, deserves a nod. Of course, it's still fun showing them your tail lights!

Shoot me an email if you ever come up my way. :nice:
