Light Bar vs. Roll Bar

yup, mine is a CDC bar...and it feels like you could hook a rope to it and tow the car with it

No... did you install it yourself? I guarantee you that you can't tow your car with it. Try it and come back and tell me what happened. :p

Here's some pics before I installed mine myself...

See how thin the tubing is?

And look at how the tubing is "flattened"... no tubular strength...

See my point? It's all show.

yup about 6 years ago...

and I see your point I just don't agree with it ;)
the CDC bar is advertised as being 1/8" (.125) wall 1 1/4" dia. tube (and I just went and popped one off the stupid caps off to check the thickness :D )...and NHRA calls for .134 wall and 1 5/8 or 1 3/4" tube for roll cages...so the diameter is less than optimal for a roll bar but the wall thickness is pretty darn close

and the flattened part is just the ends, with it upside down I could see where they compressed it...and from a manufacturing stand point, it is many times easier to bend a round tube than a flat tube across it's long axis, so it would make little sense to use a flattened tube for the complete bar...

anyway, it's no big deal, but I KNOW it made a huge difference in the stiffness of my car...

Personally, I would not race a vert without at least a 6-point roll bar.

yeah i have an 02 coupe & my wifes 03 vert (even with huge custom subframes) still feels sloppy.

i have seen pics of a mustang that rolled with the light bar & it totally worked just like a rollbar...........although i would not trust it.

I can't say I've ever seen my theory tested but it just doesn't look anywhere near as strong as an actual six-point roll bar (this is two point and small and thin and flattened. Doesn't matter where it's flattened cause that the weakest link where it will go wrong first) but I could be wrong. 3,500 lbs of vert with a massive amount of force behind it... :nonono:

If you have access to pictures I would love for you to post them.

I could be wrong but I wouldn't risk my life on one.

Btw, I had a four point roll bar on my jeep and it was way stronger then this thing. With the jeep roll bar with one person on each side you could not twist it at all, the lightbar with someone on each side you can twist it.

Hmmmm.... maybe... doesn't look like the car got impact behind the windshield or else I would think the door would show some damage. That door and scoop behind the door looks too clean. Too bad we can't see the top of the light bar for impact...

But thanks for the pic... :nice:

by looking at the windshield it looks like it really did go over.
i am with you on the fact that those things are not even close to as strong as a roll bar.
i have not seen a roll bar i liked in a vert yet.
i know they would not withstand the full weight of the car, but there are probably some rollovers where the full weight of the car does not land squarely flat on the top.
i believe that the light bar is better than nothing at all though.
