How much is this 72 mustang worth?

i could not look under the car but from inside the floor did not look to bad. i will be getting the 67&68 I6, but i not for sure how long the 72 will be there dont know where the guy that owns it is and if the bank took his land.

the point i was trying to make is that if it's a good shell it's worth 500 bucks pretty easy, provided there is no rust through on the body or at least any major rust through. surface is rust is nothing, in fact on a lot of older cars the surface rust will actually preserve the car better than paint if the car has been sitting in a field for 20 years

what am i missing that you guys are seeing? it looks to me like a decent body, a lot of surface rust to be sure but that can be sanded off and is not detrimental to the structure. even if needs floors the rest of the body looks to workable and it is a fastback, if it was a coupe i'd say it wasn't worth more than a few hundred bucks but for a fastback with a fairly decent shell 5-600 bucks is a pretty decent deal.
You're right, I'm just "assuming" it's got structural rust issues by the fact that it's sitting outside in the elements successfully pretending to be a planter. I have no idea how long it’s been sitting there, but past exposure to classic automotive lawn art leads me to believe that it’s probably rotting from the ground up.

That car looks really nice to me. Of course you have to get under it and look at the floor, etc to be sure. From what I can see in the pictures there are no holes through anything at least.

That's not rust! I'll show you rust! :D

I don't think people from California really know what rust is. :) Even garaged stuff sometimes looks that bad here in MN.

Yeah, most likely you're right, unfortunately.

It would be worth it to me getting on hands and knees and having a look, though.

I beleive the car has been sitting there around a year. as far as rust i did not see any holes through the car. there were a couple in the floor but not very big. the hood was over on the ground and rusted through.. the engine was out sitting on a tire and the tranny was still in the car.

Being from CT I'm probably unfairly negatively tainted. I really know nothing about the lifespan of a car sitting outside in OK. You being from TX probably have a better instinct in this area.

there are several older car wrecking yards around this part of the country and as long as the interior is out of the car or at least if the carpet is out they seem to hold up very well sitting outside.

Must be nice. Salvage yards around here don't carry anything older than 1985.

It's NOT worth buying that car in the condition that it's in. You will need a LOT of money to recondition it. You are better off buying one that needs "minimal" body and mechanical work. It costs more to recondition a rustbucket than it does to buy one that's in decent condition.

again i ask, if you guys are seeing something i'm not. ALL i see is surface rust, we've already established that the floors are in decent shape with only very minor rot and no rust throughs on the body that could be seen. why is everyone so quick to condemn the car as a rust bucket? the surface rust means very little.

i'm not going to argue the point that it would take some work and some cash to put the car back on the road but the big body cars are rising in value every day just like all other mustansg are. personally i would very much like to have a 72 fastback with the Sprint option, i think they were very cool cars and the cloth/vinyl upholstery was very cool also, especially since it was the only 72 mustang offered with any type of cloth upholstery and the Sprint package is very patriotic, i think. if i was closer i might consider getting this car for myself, actually.

i just still want to know why everyone is condemning this car as a rust bucket.

when i go back ill take some more pics a little closer. and of the floor and trunk and look to see if the windows are any good
What you want is a screw driver or other solid item to "poke" at the floors and other metal objects.

The floors will "oil can" if they are getting thin. Step on them, don't just look at them. First they get thinner and thinner before they rot all the way through.

Look at edges and corners underneath. IIRC there isn't much aftermarket for the later big Mustangs, so it will be annoying to try to find any replacement metal. Take your time and bring a good light and maybe a blanket or old clothes. This is the worst time to hurry at all.

I hope that helps. I've made some hasty decisions because I got enfatuated with cars. I'd hate to see you do it. :nice:
