Propper Clutch feel / play / slack in a 02GT and 99GT

All,

A friend of mine just bought a 99GT 35th anniverary edition and I drove it home for him and the clutch felt weird when compared to my 02GT.

The 99 has TONS of play in the clutch . I can pull up on the pedal and there is a few inches of play from where the clutch stops comming up on its own and to the top of where the pedal can stop. It seems to drive ok, expect the range the clutch actually grabs seems to be shorter then my 02GT.

It also grabs RIGHT off the floor, there is not even the smallest amount of room there. My 02 I can bring the pedal a little off the floor before it starts to grab and then I have about 2 inches give or take of it grabbing, then it pops up to the top of where the pedal sits. I have my quadrant adjusted one click to take about 1/2" of slack that I used to have.

So how should the clutch feel, where should it start to grab, how far should it travel while its grabbing, etc.

I am wondering whose is right, or if they both sound off.

Thanks

~K

Well, for starters, the 99 and 02 GTs have two totally different transmissions. The 99 has a T45. The 02 has a T3650. Therefore they also have different clutch setups which causes the different feel.

Do the cars have different gears also? I know I had to relearn how to do smooth takeoffs after my gear swap. Hell, I can now let out the clutch and just go with minimal gas pedal with the 4.10s, whereas I had to slip the clutch with 3.27s.

Sorry but no thats wrong... the clutch on the T-3650 is larger but the feel should be the same since they use the same quaderant and cable setup.

The problem is in the stock quadarant, those things suck if you want my opinion. over time they can slip and not adjust right or flat out break.. There is a TSB out there for the quaderant and this problem.

Here is a link on how to get around the crappy auto adjuster, that is the cause of your problem.

We have both a T-45 and a TR-3650, stock clutches in both and the T-45 is heavier. The rest of the issue - slack, friction point, etc - is all in the adjustment, but the weight of the pedal is totally different because of the different size clutches (10.5" in the T-45, 11" in the 3650).

I just picked up a FRPP quadrant/adj cable kit. In the link given if you scroll down to the 1st pic I think it was, with a sideview of the stock quadrant, is that metal clip and maybe a nut the only thing that holds that quadrant on?

only thing that holds it on is a codder pin...
