If you've had your fuel tank replaced, please read...

I have just started to have the problem after having no issues after 9 months on 2006 GT. This last 2 days I have smelt raw gas fumes but no leaks then today for the very first time I could not fill my tank completely even after going to 2 stations. I finally inched it up to almost full but I see a TSB on this for 2005's. I have already had my filler tube replaced when my check engine light came on about 5 months ago.. Total 9 months 8K mileage on new car... Any thoughts or help here... its filled every time till today. Thanks.

had mine done...all is well now!

Just had my tank replaced, along with the fuel pump/sender, and now I can fill the tank on full blast without a problem. Only "problem" is that it takes a while for the gauge to register the full tank (kind of creeps slowly up) but otherwise it's perfect now.

Fuel Tank Issues

My son and I both purchased new 05 GT's in late 04 and experience the fill problem, he complains about it more than I do. I fill slowly with the engine off. I have noticed that filling up with the engine running makes the gas gauge move up to full very slowly, but if you turn the motor off and then back on it goes right to full.

I've always been hesitant about having the dealer pulling a major part, it's just a minor anoyance to me that I can live with.

Just my thoughts

Mine is an '06 and I have had a few times where it will stop and not take any more. If the pump lever has the 2 indents on it, I use the first one you get to so it pumps a bit slower. I've never had any problems with it that way. Or if it has no indents I stand there the old fashioned way...I can easily spare an extra minute or 2 for my baby...lol.

I'm with tapd117 about living with a "minor anoyance"...which this is not that big of a deal IMO.

I took my '05 to the dealer for this problem - in my case it'll refuse to fill beyond just over 1/2 tank no matter how slowly you dribble it in. This happened about 20% of the time when I attempt to fill the tank and seems to be worse in cool weather.

The dealer gave me an official-looking document with a Ford oval suggesting that I pound sand. Oh, and fill my tank slower (I've tried - doesn't make any difference - once it stops taking fuel, it just stops). What a disappoinment this car's turned out to be - brilliant concept with sloppy, sloppy execution.

I've had the same problem with my car as well. I discovered two things:
1) When filling up with gas, if I park on a slope with the back of the lower than the front it is almost impossible to fill up. If the front of the car is lower it works great.

2) Using the slowest speed setting at the pump helps when the car is level, but if I park at a pump with the front end sloping down I can use the highest setting.

I Don't know if this will help anyone else or not, but it has aleviated my problems.

I was under the impression that ALL gas station lots were level so it made for accurate oil and other readings...

Not around here. Pay attention the next time your at the station. Some are level, a lot are not. It's very rarely a large slope, but there is usually a noticeable slope of a few degrees.

I had the same issue when my tank was replaced - I'd get to a 1/2 tank, then it would cut-off. This only happened 2 or 3 times, and only in the first couple of weeks after the fix. Been over a year with the new tank and it fills perfectly at any gas-station.

Can I ask - is everyone still experiencing the old issue, where the pump would cut-off after every 10cents-or-so of gas? "Minor inconvenience" isn't what that amounted to - it often took me >10 minutes to get a decent amount of gas into my car. That's more like rid-dog-damn-diculous.

i had my tank replaced, and i still experience that. it is limited to certain time s. i think the fuel pressure from the pump is too great for the tank. i can fill up at the same station, same pump, at a later time with no problems.

i always use QuickTrip stations.

I think I have a different problem I only get about 220 miles out of each tank.. I had the fuel fill up problem and a new tank put on twice... I have been waiting to do it again because even after the 2nd time I had the fillup issue but it has almost gone away it seems now though... But my issue now is i get only 220 miles to a tank seems kinda crappy to me...

Do you drive it hard - mostly in town? At 16 gals. that's about 14 miles a gallon, which isn't great, but not way off, especially if (like me) you like to put the foot down when that light turns green.

I do about 50/50 town/freeway and my mpg is currently reading 17.9.

My car has just over 17k miles and just started experiencing the dreaded 'fuel fill' issue very recently. Tech looked at it and stated he could find no issues? Something is blocked as it filled fine for years. I found out I could leave the key turned on and turn the nozzle handle to the 2oclock position and proceed to fill the tank at a slow/moderate rate. Have ordered a new vent line filter for the evap system ($20+).
