I don't come over here much, but knew you guys would appreciate this story. As you can see from my sig below, I have partial possesion of my parents '66 Fastback, by partial I mean they intend to let me have it once I have somewhere to keep it and my intentions. Luckily, I live within 150yds of my parents and the Mustang is in their barn. Yes, there are still some unrestored Mustangs in old barns and this one hasn't seen road time since 1985. I was 14 when it was parked.
Now, over the years, it has pretty much sat in storage waiting on me to change that fortune. Now 35, I am financially becoming more able to do things and the Mustang's restoration is always on my mind.
Over the past couple of weekends, Dad has wanted to clean up the shop/barn. Moving everything out and raking debris that has blown in over the season. So, friday I took the tarps/car cover off the '66 and noticed the rear tires were pretty flat/shot, deciding to roll her out into the daylight to get a look at her since the last time was about 6 yrs ago. I pull out the lug wrench and loosen the rear lugs, jack her up and put two large stands underneath. Toss the wheels into my pickup and go to get some used tires put on, but had to leave then overnight til saturday morning.
I come back and give her a wash, just for general principle and cover her up for the night outside the barn. However, early saturday morning about 1:30 am came a down burst of rain. I hadn't checked the weather, so there I go at 1:30am out the door across my yard in boxers/tshirt/umbrella and flashlight to make sure the Mustang wasn't taking on water with those 41 yr old window gaskets. Sure enough one of the tarps had blown off, so I grab it up and put it back over the car, making sure it would stay this time.
How's that for love? My wife never knew I went missing. Ha!
It rained pretty hardon and off til about 7am, I went an picked up the wheels with used rubber(nice tires) and reinstalled them. I pumped up the front two tires(still ok)and had my wife get in to steer and I rolled it back into the stall. Man, those cars are easy to push. Once in, I made some adjustments, put one of my old covers over it and reinstalled the large tarp with some bungee straps.
This may not seem a whole lot, but boy did it ever get the ideas rolling in my brain. I'm currently working on my own shop plans and hope to have it completed by Spring. The '66 moves there at that point. Dad seemed pleased I was out in the rain at an ungodly hour to check on her, I see the "partial possesion" pendelum swinging more in my favor to full possesion.

Thanks for reading guys.

I've spent all weekend with my loved one too!
Great feeling isn't it!:nice:
Becareful who you share the story of running out in the rain to check on your "beloved" with, only us hard core die-hard Mustanganatics will truly understand.
A few weeks ago my uncle was visiting for a couple of days. One evening we had horrendous winds and rain, when all of a sudden we heard a tremendous crash/bang.......I ran outside in the weather to check, when I came back in my uncle asked if the roof [of the house] was o.k., my response,"How the hell should I know, I was checking on the Mustang!"

Good luck with yours, may you have many happy years together.:nice:

Thats awsome, sounds like you finaly got the modivation you need to get started on her.

Oh, I've always had the motivation, just never enough money. I love the car, but when they are tucked away and hidden, days turn to weeks, weeks to months etc... Thankfully its a solid car, and I just happen to know the originals owners.:nice:

Thats cool, your going to have a blast, I know exactly where your comming from about the cash issue. I'm glad i did mine while i was living at home, because i couldnt never afford it after rent, car payment, cell phone, college payment, and lots more, Someday i hope to do another car, but like you said it will be a while before i get my feet planted.

Yeah, they wouldn't let me near it when I was younger. Good thing probably. I had to buy my own and eventually sold it. This one stays til I'm gone. I don't expect a quick turnaround once restoration starts, but at least its a start. Its gonna need alot of work, since everything is pretty much original.

I had to re-read that a couple time... :D

It's a great feeling when there's an end result to work towards. Glad the old Pony is getting some well deserved attention.

I'm in a similar boat as you, and the same age. After selling my 69 Chevelle as a college student years ago, I've been kicking myself in the ass for years. I've been wanting another classic for years, but finances, timing, and opportunity were never in sync for me to make a go of it.

I was finally able to find and buy a 68 coupe in April and have done a little work on it, but it's definitely a long-term project. I keep telling my wife that I will probably actually complete the car about 2 weeks before our son (now 2 years old) turns 16. Then, we'll have to argue over why I get to drive it instead of him! :D

Enjoy the car, and best of luck w/ it!!

I saw my typo and thought nobody will notice....wrong:SNSign:

I might roll her out again to take some pics, seems you always forget to do that when you have the chance. It looks pretty good overall, Dad had it painted about a year before he stopped driving it. So it doesn't look terrible, just dull and peeling in the area where there was a little body work done years ago.

I mentioned I had bought my own Mustang, that was around 1991. I found a pretty nice 69 Fastback in Winter Blue. It was a 351w car with a FMX tranny. I drove it for about 3 years and eventually started tearing it down to fix issues that had popped up. Of course it eventually got put on hiatus when I got married in early 1999 to my 1st wife. We later divorced and not until 2001 did I sell it so I could move forth on building my house. I sold the 69 to help finance that. I miss it sometimes, but I didn't need two or three projects.
