Anyone using a PCV oil separator system?

I removed my throttle body assembly last week to make some measurements for a home built throttle body spacer.
(Not that difficult) I'm making it out of Delrin plastic for ease, heat resistance and light weight.

I found quite a bit of oily residue in the throttle body throat and beyond.
Some wet, some dry. :nonono:
Much more than I expected to find at 40,000 miles.

The car does suffer from detonation, so my idea is to install an oil seperator on the PCV system.
Anyone already got one installed?
What brand?
What style? (bell jar, paper filter, or motoblue?)
Does it work well?

Any info would help.

There are many prople using separators. A lot of threads out there on many different forums.

I took some pictures of the CMCV plates when I installed the FRPP delete plates last month. There was quite a bit of blow by after 46K miles.

All you have to do is buy the oil separator kit from Steeda or someone else, cut the pcv hose and put the separator between the 2 cut sections of hose. Of course you'll have to drill and mount the bracket that comes in the kit.

If you are experiencing detonation right now you should get that tune tweeked.

FWIW I don't see how the oil separator kits are of any benefit unless you are running a roots or twin screw supercharger with the intercooler that can get clogged with oil from the blowby residue/gases.

If Ford felt it was going to be a problem for the engine out to 150,000 miles, they would have installed an oil separator. I'm surprised they did NOT install oil separators on the 03-04 Cobra, Ford GT, GT500 and Ford Lightning with the blowers.

I have heard from tuners in the past that the PCV's blowby gases can reduce "horsepower" due to the hot oil getting burned in the intake air mixture but I have a 1981 302 V8 that has had about 25 years worth of blow-by residue in the combustion chamber and heads. It does not detonate on 87 octane gas.

I agree, but how much of a gain do you really see? A restriction in the separator will probably cause more problems than good (restricted PCV system can cause ring sealing issues).

I think it's more about keeping a build up of deposits out of the intake tract than anything and definitely out of the intercooler in my case. Bottom line is if you see oil deposits an oil separator will only improve that.

Agreed.

Well it took some time and more than a few trips to the parts store, but I now have an oil seperator for the PCV system.

I replaced the driver side PCV valve cover vent line with a mini K&N style filter directly off the cover and plugged the intake vacuum port.
(Not emission legal)

Then installed the oil separator filter/bowl inline with the passenger side valve cover PCV vent line.

So far I have not had any drivability issues, keeping my ears open for detonation, and watching my milage.

Hopefully this will solve the problem.
