Won't go into 1st, 3rd and pops out of 5th

OK Stangers - my problem is as described above. I have to really push the shifter hard in 1st and 3rd usually grinds no matter how hard I push the shifter. When I'm in 5th gear it will just pop out randomly. When I shift into 2nd & 4th it feels like a firm shift (goes in all the way) but 1, 3 & 5 feels like it stops just short of going "all the way" in gear. This started about 2 weeks ago and then after a couple of days seemed to "fix" itself and then today it started again. I have to take a road trip in a couple of days and I can't hold it in 5th for 4 1/2 hours.

What could be the problem??

Are you using the adjustable shift stops? The bolt may be out of adjustment and might be stopping your shifter from completely engaging 1,3, and 5th. I don't know about the hurst shifters for our cars, but my MGW has the stops. MGW recommends not using them at all.

I know my Hurst has shift stops but I didn't do any adjustments when I installed it because it shifted perfect until now. I'll check it out to be sure. BTW, I just changed the trans fluid with Royal Purple 1 month before I installed the shifter so it should be fine.

Correct, but the shifter more than likely has stops too...and if set, they can cause problems.

Also, stuff sometimes falls inside the shifter from the top preventing either shifts up or down.

ANytime there are issues shifting to the top 3 gear or the bottom row, it's a problem with the shiofter most of the time

i read about some people with hurst shifters having this problem. check the stops and if that dosent help any pull it out and inspect the ball. maybe also try going back to the stock shifter to see if that changes anything

since its more than one gear, and its popping out of another...I'd have to guess one of two things...

Either your clutch is going south in a hurry, or its not engaging properly.

If you don't have one already get a firewall adjuster and solid quadrant.

If you've got the stock stuff, try the adjustment method by pulling up on the pedal and pressing it back down.

OHHH... I bet the shift stops were not flush to the shifter or removed before install, that will cause this problem, and when it pops out like that it will bend the shift forks. not engaging 1-3-5 is a sure sign of that.. 2-4 would not be effected by the same stop as 1-3-5

Bent shift forks = trans rebuild :( Sorry to tell you this but that was a very expensive mistake if all the clues here are right. But before you do that adjust the stops so they never touch and see if it still pops out

not only can it bend the forks, popping out of a gear rounds the engaging teeth on the synchros. fix it now or you will be purchasing gears and synchros.

it's easy to replace, but time consuming, and expensive.

$.02

Bent shift forks don't usually happen together. Each one of the gears he mentioned has it's own shift fork. If he bent the shift fork he would have an issue with both gears associated with it.

For example, if he bent the 1-2 shift fork, he would have a problem with both those gears.

Instead he is having problems with the top side of 3 different forks, and no issue with the partner gear

It could be shift fork, but i won't suggest that until the easy stuff is checked first...like shifter.

Well, it was the evil shift stops on the shifter. The forward lock nut had loosened and the shift stop was adjusting itself in and out - explaining the "fixed itself" a few days ago. I removed the shift stops on the Hurst and all is OK now. Whew!! What a relief!

Thanks for all the suggestions and I will certainly be wary of after market shift stops in the future - not that I will be relinquishing my Hurst anytime soon

Glad ya found the problem! Usually when you're having shifting issues with more than one gear it can be related to something like that!

I missed the part where you mentioned having the shift stops installed. Tremec specifically advises against using them w/aftermarket shifters.

Eitherway, glad you got it fixed.
