I don't know if you guys can help me or not with this but my stang is riding on this. I will be getting married in May and will become the primary driver on my car. Right now i have my mom as the primary driver and i am the primary driver for a buick. I pay 700 a yr for the buick and i am a little conserned about what my insurance is going to be on my stang when i get it full time. My fiance is driving a Taurus and is paying 1200 a yr. Both of us have only had one accident in our lives. Now i know that when you get married your insurance goes down but how much? I love my car dearly but if i have to pay 3-4 grand a yr to drive it well its not gonna happen.

What do you people that are the primary/main drivers for your mustang pay a yr and what company do you use?

I hope i am getting nervous for nothing because i would really love to keep my car. Its not in the best shape but its still cool to say i drive a mustang. :nice:

Thanks,

Nick

I believe that you could expect your ins to go down 15-35% after getting married. It kinda sounds like the best thing for you to do would be to sell the Mustang and share the Taurus. It sucks that ins costs are so high for you. Do you have credit issues or problems with your driving record or do you live in an area that just has really expensive ins?

Another thing you can do is call around and get price quotes from a bunch of companies. I have done this many times and some of the cheaper ones I have found are Amica and AIG. Make sure you specifically tell the agent that you want the state minimum coverage and get the highest deductable you can afford, I suggest no less than $500.

Also, I have my Mustang listed on the policy as a pleasure vehicle. The Honda Civic is my primary car. There are a lot of ways to reduce and minimize ins costs.

Lots of variables affect yor Ins. cost. Best thing to do is devote a day or 2 to calling around. Also even though the agents my sell the same insurance there will be price differences. Trust me the same insurance company I got 4 different prices just by calling different agents.

Oaky i'll have to try that.

As for driving record. I have only had one accident the first year i got my liscense. And then i got a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt. I live near chicago so maybe thats why my insurance is so high?

I think though that the stang is gonna have to go.

Haha, you inspired me! I just did a preliminary online quote with State Farm and it is HALF of what I am paying now

I forwarded the quote to a local agent, now its time to see what kind of a deal I can make once he actually has my VINs, driving history, and credit report :nice: Even if it goes up 25% from the intial quote it will still be much cheaper :)

Well needless to say, you will more than likely be paying more than 700 a year no matter what you do. If that is all you and your fiance can afford, unfortunately, this is not the car for you. Remember, it is a performance car, and thus higher risk, and higher rates.

I am married, with 3 cars on my policy and life and renters insurance with the same firm and I pay about $2000 every six months. Approx. half of that is the Stang. I had a minor accident about 3 years ago as well.

Hope this helps.

I used to be on the same policy as my parents when i was younger. When i got my gt i got my own insurance. I didnt actually expect my premium to be lower. One thing you may want to consider is that if you are currently one your parents policy, check to see how much liability coverage they are carrying. Mine have assets that would be at risk should they get into an accident (house etc.) whereas i didnt, so i didnt really need as much liability coverage and my premium was alot lower. Call around or go online and get some quotes, you may be suprised.

Well i am on my parents insurance but i am the primary driver of my 02 gt I pay almost 4k a year with 3 points and 3 accidents on my liscesne so i dont think you need to worry lol OH and before i get reemed for how i shouldnt have one, i havent gotten a ticket on been in a accident in about a year and im paying for it all on my own

Yeah, State Farm is pretty much awesome. I used to have progressive and my fiance' had encompass, and I was paying $355 a month and she was paying $140. She has a 98 Neon and is 20, I have a 97 GT Vert and I am 19. So together we were paying $495:nonono: We Switched to State Farm and we pay $265 for both of us AND we have renters insurance included in that price (it's 12.50 a month but the multi-line discount is 26.50:rolleyes: ) When we get married in March it will be $171 a month for us. State Farm FTW!:hail2:

i'm paying $75 a month for the stang which is listed as a pleasure vehicle, $35 a month for my DD 94 olds, $10 a month for ATV theft and fire. that was $120 a month before i was married.
my wife was paying $120 a month for her 99 grand cherokee.

now that we are married and on the same policy we are paying a total of $170 a month for 3 cars and a ATV. thats a savings of $70 just for being married :nice:

State Farm FTL. When I needed them (like a good neighbor) the most, they dropped me and my policy

I'm with progressive drive now :nice: . 2 accidents (no fault ), 1 speed ticket, 34 yrld, married. Full coverage, no deductable for $63 per month.

There are to many variables involved to base your estimated ins. cost by asking other people. Try calling agents as suggested, I'm sure you'll find a great deal.

I can't thank you guys enough for all the help.

I called a my insurance agent and it looks like i will be paying anywhere from 800-1000 every 6 months. I am with state farm now but i am going to shop around still

Ok I am an insurance agent, and while most of you are right, there are a lot of factors that determine the premium. Different companies obvioulsy rate differently. Some there is a dramatic difference for marriage and pleasure driving. Some rate in a way that you have no control over. For example. Progressive rates the most expensive driver on the most expensive car, no matter what. So if you drive the stang on the weekend and commuter back and forth during the week, you are still being charged on commute because they dont change the rate for pleaseure/commute, they just want to know how you are driving the car- this is assuming you are the highest risk driver and the stang is the highest risk car. Just FYI. If you have any questions ask away.

Well i have only had one accident i want to drive the car year round and be covered in case i hit someone or if someone hits me. I don't know what size deductable to choose.

I n all honesty this is all new to me i never thought about any of this before. My parents just use to tell me that my insurance was due and i payed them.

Shallowreef:

If there is anyone in your immediate family eligible for USAA (they must be active Military service, or already a usaa member) that would be my first recomendation. I actually get a rebate check most years for about 1 month coverage with no claims!!! :hail2:

My insurance is only about $10 more per month for the 2003 mustang that for my old 2002 explorer.

FYI: Before you make the decision to get rid of the stang look into the rates for the car that will be replacing it. When I started driving I bought a VW Golf and my insurance would have been the same as having a Corvette!!!! :owned: Just a thought...

Seriously just call up an agent state farm or other and talk to them. They want your buness and some agents will look for any discount they can toss your way to get and keep your buisness. Don't knw how old you and your wife are but I pay about 181mo for a 02 Focus and my Stang. As long as you keep it garaged and try not to live in a total crap hole neighborhood you'll do okay.
