what type of motor???

Hi,

I can buy a 2.3 turbo intercooled engine with very little running hours on it.
The engine was only used at a school for mechanics at an engine stand.
The owner doesn't know where the engine comes from or what year it is.
I believe it is a SVO type of engine.
Does anybody know???
These are the numbers on the ECU, maybe someone can tell me more about it.
PF3E52F-F3D
On the connector there's the following number D8A07 E52F12A650-F3D
Also the following info he could find somewhere PF3-EEC-IV EFT-TC5

Would this be a good candidate for a Volvo 16v swap??
Currently I have a carburated 79 Cobra turbo.

That's from a 87 or 88 turbocoupe. Same type of 2.3 as the SVO and I believe the same block as your Cobra.

I'd say snag it, definately.

Though, if I'm not mistaken, with everything that you'd have to do to give it the Volvo swap, it would be no different if you performed the swap on your current motor.

Pic's too small to see any detail but the ECU and v belt setup tell that it's an older (83-86) engine with an intercooler from a 87-88 TC added on...

It's not the same as the 79 engine in any way...different block, different head, pistons, etc...only similarity is they are both 2.3 turbo engines...

I assume this would be an '85 engine because the number on the ECU is E5ZF, I'm not sure if the engine has a watercooled turbo with the #35 injectors yet.
If I'm correct '85 was the year that the engine setup changed to the bigger turbo (watercooled) and bigger injectors.
Enginewise I've been told all 2.3 engines are the same base, only different cam setup and some other minor changes.
I'm not sure however if this is an SVO, t-bird or a XR4TI engine.

I don't think it would make sense to ship the engine to the US monywise.
As I live in Europe you're better of buying one in the US.
These engines are quite plentifull here in Europe because in Belgium you have to pay tax by engine size.
I have a spare engine with my car but at the moment it's for sale including the spare engine.
If it doesn't sell I'm planning to buy this TI motor and start the Volvo swap.
The only reason that I would like to buy it is that it has Fuel injection.

Very differant. Belt type of my 86 Coougar motor,87 87 type turbo valve cover and intercooler. Check bellhousing looks like automatic c-3 or c-4 .C-4 buildable for horsepower sounds like Volvo head can do,Or is it a bellhousing for a front wheel drive type. C-4 bellhousing extremly sellable if you are not using. Looks like good way to start.

Yes, the E5 part # says it is at least an 85, though it could be newer. I'd have to look up what vehicle used the PF3 processor though.

Looking at the larger pics, it has an IHI turbo (87-88 TC only) along with it's intercooler. Still has the older belt system though. Motor mounts appear to be 87-88 style as well.

I'd say it's last home was in an 87-88 turbo coupe, though the ECU provided was not used at that time.

mg man, there are no front drive bellhousings for this motor...it was never used in a front drive application.

biffmeistro, the oil return line hole is on a different side of the block on the carb-turbo blocks...as well as having different casting #'s that show it's a different block all together.

Is this EFI a non mass air setup?
Would this be a nice pickup to modify?
Thats the only reason I'm thinking about getting it but I'm not sure how this ecu will react to bigger injectors etc.
I have also a 1987 5.0 that I converted to mass air because this systems accepts modicifation a lot better.

The ECU may be from a Merkur but the engine isn't...

2.3T's were never mass-air. They were vane air which was the predecessor to the mass-air units. The engine you are looking at is the same as every other 2.3T engine you see modified, anything we have done to them you can do to that one...they are all the same...
