Whats up all...

The time has come to go ahead and get a new CAI system to make my baby fly. I am focused on performance gain more than anything else. I have done some research and it seems that the C&L and JTL are the two best choices. However, I know that our new stangs are picky as far as the computers go. So my question is how involved in the Custom packages that we need...

Do you have to have the tuner that goes along with the CAI, or are you able to go to your local mustang dealer and pay them some cash to flash your computer? Will dealers or mechanics be able to give your car a 'one time' flash, or is it necessary to buy the $300 + tuners?

If you need a purchase a tuner, any recommendations on the cheapest way to go with one?

Help me out guys

Is it worth spending the extra 200-300 for the tuner? Are you not able to just go to a dealership and have them re-flash you for cheaper?

Also, I've heard mumblings that you can see a performance gain just by simply re-tuning your car.. any truth to this? and if so, would one of these tunes accomplish that as well?

It would probably be a good idea to get the tuner. That way you can get a custom tune down the road if you want it and still be able to switch back and forth between tunes. Also, the tuners read your Check Engine Light codes and as it was said before, can turn off your rear MILs if they mysteriously get stolen.

You could probably go to a tuner and get it done, but I don't really know how much they would charge and if something goes wrong you have to go back to them instead of being able to diagnose the problem yourself.

Edit: Yes, a re-tune would help gain some power, but not a significant amount I don't think. The handheld tuners would be able to do that. Mainly what you are going to get out of a CAI/Tune is INCREDIBLE throttle response (say goodbye to throttle lag), a much more crisp feel to the car, and a very noticeable power gain.

Some cold ait intakes don't require a tune, but they do not offer as much power as one with a tune. Your looking at 15-20 without a tune and 25-30 with one. You could have someone from a performance shop flash your computer, but you need to store your stock tune somewhere and therefore you need a tuner device. Also, a tuner is going to cost you 200-300 just to create a program for you car on the dyno and that's the cost of a tuner w/ 3 programs. I like the Demolet Tunable Induction, but there are a lot of good choices.

Basically get the 300 dollar tuner with your intake. You will have 3 "canned" tunes that come on the tuner you buy that will be fine for you unless you want a lot more. It definitely beats out having to pay a shop to do it all for you because they are going to charge you an arm and a leg and quite possibly your first born child for all the work.

They cannot flash you a performance tune
