this is my sister's car. i messed it up. i had a shifter that i was going to put on my sisters 01 celica auto. i tried to install it but it would not work correctly. so i put the stock one back on and i can't get the key to go into the lock position so i can pull it out unless i unscrew the shifter and pull up on it a little until i hear the lock click. also sometimes i can't get the but to depress when i try to get it out of park. is there some sort of adjustment. all i did was take the knob off install another and then reinstall the stock part. i didn't mess with anything else. i thought but just tightening the 2 screws down on the knob that it would work fine. anybody know what is wrong here. thanks.

All you removed was the shifter handle?

On the linkage in the shift handle rod itself (what the shift handle screws onto), does it return to the top on its own or do you have to pull it up (this would be tested with no shift handle installed)?

If the handle sitting is at the correct height (generally if the Carter pin goes back in, it's ok), I'm not sure.

If it works okay with the handle removed, I like your idea about the handle not meshing correctly with the rod. You might just have to play around with it to find a happy spot. It's weird that you pull up on the handle to get it to spit your key out. I've not known a car to keep the key if the button is held down - then again, I havent tried it since thumbing the handle-button and releasing the key is kinda unnatural.

Sorry to not have any great thoughts.

Good luck.

i almost bought a celica once, not bad cars really as long as you never actaully look at the outside, and that whole wrong wheel drive thing, i have just never felt right in a front wheel drive car, oh and hit the shifter with a hammer that will fix it, or curse at it really loud and it will work, that how i fix all the stuff that breaks on my mustang i curse at it then solve the problem with money, i guess that is why i am always broke, but hey i got a 97 on the mechanical section of the asvab so i must know what i am talking about( boy the airforce is gonna be surprised when they find out all i know how to use is duct tape, hammers, cresent wrenches, and my debit card)

P.S i have had the flu for a week not responsible for the contents of this post, becuase the flu sucks
