Stock radio wiring question

Does anyone know the color codes for the stock 78 am/fm radio speaker wires? The Haynes manual only shows two rear speakers and makes no reference to a front speaker(s), raising the question as to why there is a fader knob below the pushbuttons. I have five wires from the radio: white/green, orang/green, black/white, pink/green and pink/blue.

My copy of the Ford-printed schematic shows the blk/wht as common speaker ground, with the org/ltgrn and pnk/ltgrn ganged together on the left side and the wht/ltgrnand pnk/ltblu together on the right in the speaker harness. Seems like I remember seeing them jumpered in the harness plug, but the uncut car isn't here at the house.

I don't believe rear speakers were ever available on the II. The diagram labels them as such, but I believe they're the door speakers.

The pk/lbl and pk/lgrn would be for any additional rear speakers.

OK, so in other words, the fader control on a stock II is useless since you only have one set of left and right speakers? I realize many of you are probably scratching your heads asking why this guy is trying to hook up a stock radio, but I have my reasons. Thanks for your help.

Nothing wrong with a stock radio, I prefer them :nice: .

There were several versions of radio available for the MII (am, am/fm, am/fm/8 track, and then both mono and stereo versions). There were two speaker configurations - the single dash mounted one, and the dual door mounted. So all you'd have is left to right balance, although the wiring for front to rear fade is probably on the radio itself.

Thanks for the info. I'll sleep easier tonight. Now for the confession part- this really isn't for my II. It's for my 68 Cougar - I've adapted the 68 face plate to the radio from my Cobra II and plan to use this along with an fm modulated 12 disc hidden JVC changer. I was confused as to whether this was raelly a four-channel radio or just a two -channel unit with extra wires.

BTW, greetings to the long timers here. It's been a while since I last visited or posted here. For those who remember my Ghia convertible, unfortunately had to sell it. Still have the Cobra II, though.

good to hear from you ..
if i remember right one of the last II's i had came with 2 door speakers and the center under the dash and all of them worked. it would have been wired that way from the factory since a old lady drove it till it hit 60k and then i got it.
