I am wanting to go with Mickey thompson drag radials one day but do I need to do anything to the rear end? Or will the stock stuff be okay?

If not, what year does the 31-spline differential come out of?
Also does it come out of the f150 and explorer?

I've been looking at a Cobra 31-spline diff + Superior axles for a little while as an inexpensive route to a sturdier rear end w/out sacrificing any driveability.

Looks like I may be doing it sooner rather than later now that my pass. side axle is slightly bent (street launches on Nittos 555Rs). :D

This is VERY easy.

IF you're just running drag radials, 31 spline carrier of some sort (your choice), 31 spline axles, and rear girdle. IF you want to take it further, you can have the tubes welded to the pumpkin on the axle but I don't think you're making THAT much power yet. Also welding the tq boxes will help too.

BUT in all honesty, I would just put them on and go out there and rip off some times. I've cut multiple 1.6-1.70's on a stock 8.8 in a solid axle swapped 03 Cobra making 475rwhp (11.60s all night). Its still alive and kicking. IF you're scared, buy what I said. If you don't mind a lil gamble, go do it now.

Guy at the track had a mostly stock 95 with M/T slicks I believe. He had the car for just a couple weeks be said he raced a lot. I asked him how his rear held up to it w/out breaking - he assured me the stock stuff was strong.

Next pass his rear end gave out. :)

I run the eaton diff. with superior 31 spline axles. I was going to just buy the ford 31 spline t-lok unit, but at the time I bought mine I found a deal where the eaton was only like $30 more than the ford unit. in all honesty I wish I would have bought the ford unit. Mnay guys have exploded the cases of the eatons, but I haven't seen anyone do it to a ford unit. My dad runs the ford unit in his 11 second '91 and hasn't had an issue and its pretty much a track only car.

I advise against not using the strange SS axles. My dad, my buddy Mike, and I all had them and all bent them. We all switched to superiors and none of us have had a problem since. Mine bent after 4 passes and they bent so bad that the rear rotor was actually making contact with the caliper bracket!

Superior 31-spline axles

F-250 trac-lok

No issues and everything looks to be built like a brick ****house.

If the Explorer has a 31 spline diff, does that mean that two (I think) left side axles would be what we need to do the JY rear-end "upgrade" in our cars? $209 is cheap but, $10/side is even cheaper. The JY that I go to has TONS of Explorers.

We'll see how the Stranges hold up to my heavy arse car in the future with more power.. Paul I think you're right, My ABS light came on recently and I think maybe its due to a bent axle shaft...

Oh well, my axles were practically free and the diff only cost me a hundred bucks...

as far as I knew the f250 had a diff. rear than the 8.8 (maybe thats the HD 3/4) not sure though now that its brought up? The 1ton should be a 10.25 sterling(sp?) rear or dana 60+ and is HUGE.

the 94-95 is a 28 spline t-loc, the 8.8 F150's had a 31 spline t-loc stock The years should be something like an 87-96.

So what year 94/95's trac-loc ??

I got the F-250 (M-4204-F318) and it matched up fine with the 31-spline axles and SVO girdle?

Seems that 87+ with need of VSS were 10.25 sterlings, and non VSS were Dana 60-70's. So no 8.8 in the f250's.

That is a part number for a 31 spline 8.8 but does not say f250 http://www.lmperformance.com/6488/50.html
