So this clicking sound started to come out of the engine bay and it sounds like it could be the pulleys (BBK pulleys if it matters). I hope thats what it is, everytime at about 2300-2500 rpm's it make the clicking sound and sometimes at idle to. Anyone know what else could cause the problem. If its something internal how much would it be for an engine rebuild :(

Can you narrow it down at all? You said you suspect the pullies.. is it a certain pulley? Which side of the engine (left/right) and is it near the top, or toward the bottom.. does it do it more when cold, or more when hot.. or always?

If it sounds more like a "tick" from a clock, it could be these things:

1. Spark plug(s) turning out of the head (common in our stangs)
2. An exhaust leak
3. lifters

I would check the plugs first. ESPECIALLY if you are using the stock motorcraft plugs. Beucase if you have the plugs with the shorter amount of thread, it could be bye bye engine. They should be torqued to 11 lbs....

I know its coming from the engine and it seems to be the bottom of the pulley, but my friend checked it out as well and he thinks its coming from where the alternator is coming from. The clicking starts when the car starts to warm up, but when i drive it no matter what temp it is at it starts making the sound at about 2300-2500 rpms. I just recently had my gaskets replaced from where the header and my o/r x pipe meet so i dont thinks its that. i have bosh platinum 3 spark plugs, could those spark plugs cause detonation? i also had my timing advanced but since then i put it back to stock. The lifters, i don't have a clue how to check that. What should i try first?

Could possibly be your alternator goin out as well. Put a screwdriver on the alternator and listen through the handle to see if its coming directly from the alternator :nice:

So i take my car to a shop and they hear the clicking sound of my car, so he puts it on his smog dyno and i keep it at 2500 rpms or so and hey says its coming straight from below the intake manifold and that he's almost 100% sure its the lifters cuz the noise goes aways after i pass 3000 rpms. Anyone know if the lifters require removing the camshaft? Or what technicalities go into this. I have a 1999 mustang gt manual. Also where can i get lifters from?
HELP Please:(

well this was the thread i was looking for cuz mine is doing the exact same thing.......

around 2500 there is an annoying tick that disappears at any higher or lower rpm.....it does it in all gears except 5th but mostly becz the rpms are right below that range.......also, when shifting it does it....for example if i shift at 4000 and it idles back down to that range before i accelerate more in the next gear it will make the ticking noise as the rpms drop down......

fortunately mine is still under warranty until february of next year so ive got an appointment on wednesday to have it looked at..........ill post up what the stealership tells me............if they cant find a problem i will make sure it is very noticeable before my warranty is up

Come on guys, put on your thinking caps here!!!!

If you suspect that the noise is coming from the pulleys, you can easily determine if it is or is not, by simply removing the drive belt and having an assistant start the engine and run it for a few seconds, just long enough to listen to see if the noise has gone away or not. If it has gone away, the problem is pulley or accessory related, if not then it is indeed inside the engine.

On these engines there are no lifters per se. There are fulcrum rocker arms and hydraulic slack adjusters. They are not buried under the intake manifold. The rocker arms are between the camshaft and valves and the slack adjusters are under one end of the fulcrum rocker arms.

As mentioned by a previous poster, you can get noises as you describe from an exhaust manifold leak, or a loose spark plug.

Good luck.

I have heard of people eventually discovering that their clicking sound was in fact coming from the idler pullies.

Another way to inspect the idlers is to remove the belt and just check them for free and smooth play with your hand.

ill let the stealership figure mine out.......if everything is covered until February 26th then that means im not doing a thing til then
