Just curious, what are you guys paying for machining...like take a stock shortblock in to a machine shop, have it cleaned up, bored as needed, turn crank, install main, rod, cam bearings, new rings, basically refresh the shortblock...was quoted 1150 and thought that seemed high...

If you have the ability/garage to assemble one yourself, you might look into one of Performance Automotive Warehouse's shortblock kits. The roller 302 in my '68 came from them and I put all together myself. With a new block, ground crank, rods, forged Speed Pros, oil pump, timing set, ARP shaft, gaskets, and Crane cam it was about $1300. I would expect a semi-standard rebuild on a shortblock to be $600-800. A local high perfomance builder here will do a rebuild plus B&B for $1200(8 years ago, anyway).

Small world 65ShelbyClone, I live in Lancaster. Anyways, I know a machine shop that will do that for around $800, but my Dad knows the owner. They tumble the block, bore, hone, grind, blueprint, assemble, etc.

Lately I've been running into people that eaither live around here or used to. I found quite a few between a couple sites that I frequent.

$800 for a B&B shortblock is pretty cheap. The price I got was from Jim Grubbs down in Valencia. $1200 wasn't in the budget, though, so I ended up with a cast piston standard rebuild on a 289. It's just well because after about 10k, I lost a pump shaft and hurt that $600 engine.

are you talking about just machine work or do you want someone to build you a full short block with a block you give them.
If you take them all the parts and say machine it and assemble a block it'll be about 6-800.
if you go and say here is my block and build ma a motor it'll cost anywhere from 1200 up.
there are shops where you can get a rebuilt block and give them your core, in phoenix Az there is a place called the Engine house where you can get a newly rebuilt 302 for 600.00 and give them your core, I'm sure Cali has several places like that.

I just brought my BARE block to the shop, should run me about 510$ all said and done to:
Hot Tank and wash
paint it black
install new freeze plugs/cam bearings,
bore and hone to my new pistons tolerances
"0" deck the block to my rotating assy
and drill out a snapped motor mount bolts.

pretty good prices i think, at least up here in the NE...i supplied all the parts myself.

$1150 isn't a bad deal if that includes them supplying parts. I paid $535 for machine work. I took them a bare stock bore bock with my rotating assembly and told them what I wanted. Thois is what I had done for the $535 which doesn't include rings and assembly..

clean the block, (they baked them put oint a media blaster like machine,)
magna flux it,
bore & hone with torque plate,
notch for stroker,
0 deck the block,
main caps milled for main support,
cam bearings, & freeze plugs bought & intsalled,
check line hone,
piant block black & paint the lifter valley, with the paint that helps oil flow & drain back,
And new clevite rod & main bearings. Had to get so they could mock block up for notching and zeroing the deck.

$1150 for machine work, parts and assembley isn't a bad deal..

Here in N. Fl. the machine work: Clean and mag/ bore w/deckplate and Hone to piston/ install cam brgs/ freeze plugs/ turn crankshaft.. build short block w/ bearings/ resize rods and press pistons on... 750.00 + parts ! if stock rebuild ( bore and hone w/o deck plate ) 650.00!!

It would be cool if this goes a long way just to see what machine shops charge accross the states...??
Just me.........................................

If I remember correctly, I believe the least expensive I found was on the outskirts of north houston (conroe). I was quoted $450 for bore, hone, all bearings, hot tanked, assemble crank, rods, pistons/rings ready to run. This was a small but very reputable shop which I was referred to by several people for a quality (budget) rebuild. They didn't have the capability to deckplate. The "race shop" which had the capability to do this wanted more than double this amount and didn't seem to have such a rock solid reputation.
