What torque converter do you run????

Edge converters for a 4r70w are crap. The lockup piston is a stock 245mm gm found in cars like cavaliers. The piston is thin and small with weak springs.
The front cover is stock gm245mm crap as well. The stock converter in these cars is a better unit. Now if you are dealing with an aod or c4 I have no complaints on the edge units. These converters are built froma kit sold by sonnax. You will find many many places build the same exact stuff.

i didnt even realize i started this thread LOL

i ended up getting a 9.5inch Edge Racing 3000 stall. it was built for my current combo (h/c/i) i just finished putting in. Andre told once the h/c/i was installed it would stall at 3200.

i cant imagine getting into another mustang without a highstall.

:nice: I had him set mine up for 3,000 after a h/c/i - Mine stalls about 2,800 now.
 
Where do I get an edge 3000 stall converter. I am in the market for a converter right now since i have to replace the seals in the front of the tranny, "might as well upgrade the converter" I and going ot have TFS heads and stage one cam, with matching upper and lower intake, after that, so do I need to tell them this when i buy it. I looked online to find one but couldn't find any, thanks for your help so far dan95-5.0.... oh yea Bump hahaha

I have an Edge 3,000-3200 (9.5) rpm converter. Works great.
With the footbrake it stalls (breaks the rear wheels loose) at 3,000 rpm.
On transbrake I can rev it to about 3,500 rpm.
It is a lock up unit. I have a PA manual Valve Body and lock the torque converter with a switch that I wired in.
When I'm on the highway cruising at 60 mph in OD I just lock up the converter and it allows me to cruise at a comfortable 2200 rpm.
Don't be afraid of a high stall if you can lock it up. I drive my car pretty much daily.
Fuel economy hasn't been affected much (maybe 1 mile per gallon....unless I want to have some fun).

I have a toggle switch that I use to ground out the Brown and Orange wire that is in the connector on the Right side of my 94 AODE. This Brown and Orange wire is the ground for the torque converter clutch solenoid.
The AODE PCM is supposed to ground it out to complete the circuit. Once grounded, the torque converter clutch solenoid locks up the converter.
I switched a 5 speed Cobra computer (since I have a manual VB) so the only way I could lock up the converter is to run my own ground.
The TCC solenoid has constant power via the CCRM through the Red wire on the same connector.
So you don't have to run a power source. If you check at the connector it (red wire) is powered at all times with engine running.
You only need to supply a GROUND.
So all you would need to do is cut the Brown and Orange wire near the connector (so the computer cannot ground the TCC solenoid) and run a wire to the Brown and Orange connector wire into the passenger compartment.
Inside the passenger, mount a toggle switch (I used a plastic NOS activation type switch) so that it can ground the B/O wire.
Now you have control of the TCC solenoid (and not the computer).
I have run this type setup for 7 months now (7,000 miles?). No problems other than having to replace the TCC solenoid once ($30 I think). I now run the the TCC solenoid from a 4R70W because I believe it has a higher impedance and I think it won't burn out so quickly.
Make sure you don't run a 4R70W TCC solenoid if your computer is still controlling the ground. The higher impedance may fry that circuit in your computer.
Also make sure you don't shift with the converter locked because it will shift harshly.

I can even lock up the converter after shifting into 3rd gear. It has helped my MPH and ET slightly (about 1.5 mph and half a tenth). This reduces torque converter slippage in 3rd gear. It feels like a manual tranny.

AOD and AODE converters are not interchangable are they? I don't see many AODE converters anywhere.


Nope... I've learned the hard way that smaller companies who are successful in building converters for non-electronic trannys can't always build the electronic versions with as much success. :x
