Roush Question on removing rear bumper

Has anyone removed their rear bumper before? And if you have, what was involved? I'd like to remove mine to try and straighten up the area around the screens. It seems like the screws for the screen are too tight on one side and causing the plastic (or whatever it is) to wrap a bit.

Here is a picture; I think this shows the warp clearly on the bottom of the left screen...

Anybody else’s doing this?

Very easy! I did it to my 2001 Saleen 'vert. I'm going off of memory, so I may have left a few minor things out...

1. Jack up the rear end, put it on stands, and remove the wheels. Not sure it is absolutely necessary, but made my job easier removing the bumper.

2. Remove the screws along the edge of the fenderwell (should only be one on each side).

3. Crawl under the car and look for either one or two huge zip ties holding the lower edge of the bumper. NOTE: You'll need to find a replacement for these zip ties...Saleen or your local hardware store.

4. Pop open the trunk and remove the floor piece and interior trim pieces (left, right, and rear).

5. Once you get the trunk trim pieces out of the way, you'll see about 5 or 6 nuts that you need to remove (not sure exactly how many there were). Once removed, the bumper slides right off. There are long brackets that hold the bumper to the frame of the car along with styrofoam pieces between the brackets and bumpers.

It looked intimidating at first, but very easy to remove and reinstall. I did this to my '01 when I swapped out the standard exhaust to the center exit exhaust I purchased from Chicane.

What Rob said and he is correct about it being a little easier if you remove the rear wheels but not completely necessary if you can get to the two fenderwell phillips screws.

Also what he said it's not to intimidating. That bar he is talking about goes between the inside of the bumper and the bolts portrude back through the body and into the trunk. Once you have all of the trunk pieces out and the tailights out of the way it's a piece of cake. You will see the two side nuts that hold the sides of the bumper up ( the two red arrows ). that area also has each it's own metal bracket that is easy to hold in place when you are doing the 2 ( each side ) nuts. The long bracket in between the inside of the bumper ( above the S A L E E N ) is the one that will give you a bit of trouble. There is practically zero adjustment when you get the bumper back on. It just tightens up.

On that second pic if my trunk was open you would see the holes in the body.

Have your cordless screw gun ready with a very small phillips tip because there are about 1000 tiny screws holding those metal screens in place. What a bitch those little screws are. Also, while you are there take a little steel wool to the screens and then respray them flat black again. Just pay attention to which one is which so you don't mix them up.


I was inside there on my 2000 Speedster because the tool I bought the car from had the chrome inserts on the bumper and at some point had resprayed the bumper WITH THE INSERTS STILL ON the bumper. What an ass.

As far as it being repainted, it was touched up in June, but I don't think they removed it, just did some color matching on it. Prior to that, I don't believe so.

My '04 with center exit exhaust doesn't have any, but it is pretty sturdy. My '01 with regular exhaust had one large white zip tie in the center. When I installed the center exit exhaust from Chicane, I didn't install new zip ties.

thanks Haze, when you put the center pipes on the '01, you had to upgrade the bumper too, right?? If you don't mind me asking, what did it cost for pipes, bumper, paint and labor (thinking about upgrading for the more modern look)?

If you can get your head under there it is very obvious where the large zip ties hoop through the holes (2 ) on the leading edge of the bumper right where it makes contact with the tank. The zip ties loop around the two metal straps that hold your tank to your car. Hope that helps.

I did it because my car got rear ended. I took the insurance money and upgraded. Had to throw in a couple hundred for the difference, but it was worth it.

Do the 04's come stock with the Chicane's? Saleen website wants $1,000.00, pipes only. I assume it's because it says Saleen on the tips (not that I want to buy it from them).

Anyone compare Chicane's to the stock Saleen 04's? Same? How's do you like your's Haze?

As someone who has owned both, I like Chicane's exhaust MUCH, MUCH better! I've contemplated purchasing Chicane's and swapping...that's how much better I like them.
