overdive for C4?

I was reading in mustnag monthly, or mustangs and fords, I cant remember...anyway I saw an article on overdrive extensions for C4's. I was wondering if anyone has had them, or can tell me more about them. I would like to keep this car numbers matching, so I dont want to change the tranny out or anything, but driving on the autobahn witha three speed gets her up in the RPMs.

do you have any experience with it? or know anyone who has? is it worth it?

I know an older Mustanger from Florida (whom I've met in person a couple of times), who posts at Mustang Steve's. His name is Lou (this is also the name he posts by there).

He has a Gear Vendor over drive unit in his Mustang, and I'm sure he would be glad to answer any questions you have about it.

I installed a gearvendor unit in my 66 and am very happy with it. I did have to "reshape" the depreesion in the drive shaft tunnel directly behind the shifter in order fot it to fit in place. A five minute or less job with a medium hammer.
I decided to have a new driveshaft made instead of cutting the old one shorter. The only problem I had was with the parking brake, I have a MagnaFlow X pipe exhaust and these is very little space between the OD unit and the X pipe, for now I've secured the cable up and out of the way. I intend to work on getting it connected this winter.

I can cruise at 70 mph turning about 2200 rpms with the unit activated. I usually do not use unless I'm on the highway, a quick stab on the "extra" dimmer switch an it engages without any lurch.

This is a do it yourself job, I did it without a lift in my garage all by myself. I did drop the trans because I was replacing the torque converter, but it is not necessary to drop it just installing the unit. There are a few photos of it on my CarDomain pages, if you have specific question let me know.

If you want an overdrive you have really only two options with an automatic trans. Adding the GearVendor unit or replacing the C4 with an AOD trans. You did say that you wanted to keep it as "number matching" as possible", that makes the AOD a more difficult option. You do not have to rebuild the C4 in order to install the GV unit. You might consider installing new seals when and if you decide to install the GV.
