Anyone seen a sealed cowl?

strange65 had that idea. i was thinking about it but i dont wanna be messing with dirt/debris getting in there and then maybe getting wet. he did dhow me a link of magnetic cowl covers on ebay though. its def a good idea though. im gonna seal mine up.

I haven't done anything to mine yet. This was a pic of someone else's car. If you cut the slots then you leave the cowls open and direct air over the engine through the slots. I have bypassed the cowls for my heater. That was why I was looking at sealing them off, but this pic has almost changed my mind.

Where did you bypass the cowls to your heater from? The fender wells? Do you or anyone have any pictures of it done? thanks
 
sort of on topic but off topic as well. i'm trying to find a way to make the cowl removable in a stealth way. has anybody seen that done? and by removable i don't mean spot welded in, i mean like bolted or screwed in.

Someone makes cowl covers... simple sheetmetal piece trimmed to fit snugly in the spot. It has screws in all 4 corners that have a pin on the bottom side. Sort of looks like an upside down "T" It fits between the grill bars and you turn it so it cant come back off...

My cowl is shot so I bought one of the plastic covers for now which seals it. I don't drive it year round but have had the heat on with the cover and it seems to work. I wouldn't say it's good heat but I don't think it's due to the cover:) As said, I think there is enough leaks in the box that it can pull in air, may not be fresh but I don't think it'll create a vacuum and strain the motor
 
I supose if I were to seal my cowl vent then these slots would provide plenty of air to the heater? Any feedback would be cool! I was wondering also is this at all a structural area?

Did you do anything for extra air to the heater or do you just have the drains on each side going into the fender area?

Well I have the same thing done to my car, its not on the road so I can't tell about air supplies issues. Though I can tell you this is a structural area, these care supposedly suffer from "cowl shake" as it is. I have a roll cage with dash bar, and it ties into my TCP stuff so its not an issue really for me. There is a thread on corner carvers where some one built a small balsa and paper model of the classic mustangs unibody to measure the weakness and and what mods added strenth the the unibody chassis. People where making requests to see how the shelby roll bars, 4 pt bars, and monte carlo bars effect Maybe you can ask him to cut whole in the cowl in this manner. Seeing as more people seem to be doing it and every car Unique Perfomance does has it from what i understand.

The data is coming from an actual vintage mustang and done by a professional shop with the right tools. The Corner carving thread was a good read and also done by a professional. It would be intresting to find out from Sn65 how close he was to the actual data with the balsa model.
I seen Strange65 mustang's in person that LUCAFU1 refered too. He has a underhood cover that run's to those vents from a 68 shelby type hood.
I would be hard press to call it a 65 mustang anymore , the car has continously been customized since the 60's.
 
We smoothed the cowl on a customer's 67 recently. There's no fresh air vent anymore anyway, and the Classic Auto Air A/C is recirc only so the vent isn't missed. It looks killer IMHO and it's one of those subtle things you wouldn't even notice unless someone pointed it out to you.

So does the Classic Air system act as a heater as well? Or does your heater now just recirc air?

Just spreading the love, a very informative site, and I to spent many hours read stuff that was for fox bodies and didn't pertain to my car at all, though not for people who don't use the "search button".
 
All of the modern upgraded HVAC systems I've seen are recirc-only. After being wary of that at first, I have never had a complaint after using it.

ever do a 65-66?? I shaved the firewall and was hoping to run the heater lines much like you did in the vert. Im just worried that their systems still have the heater core go through the firewall.
