Roush '04 Cobra Eaton Blower on a '99 Saleen Cobra?

  • Sponsors (?)

way more to it, the 03 cobra uses a second set of pullies, brackets, ect, there are 2 serpentine belts on a cobra, plus the intercooler, coolant reservoir, heat exchanger, ect ect, there is alot to it, buy the time you find every single little piece, you may as well just bought a vortech or kenne bell for your year car. I've seen people do it, but most say its entirely to much work.

Billy,

Listen to Tim. That swap will turn into a "project" faster than you can hit the eject button. Leave the Cobra alone or do a Vortech on it as that's the best blower for that car. It'll be stuffed in the engine bay but it's the most refined setup for those years of the Cobra.

Be simpler to just buy a 03/04 cobra engine and drop it in, than to convert to one.
The conversion parts can get very pricey because seperate they are very expensive.

Thanks for all the information, everyone!

I was trying to avoid spending a bunch of $$, but it seems I may, in fact, be better off just spending the $$ up front and forget about the hassles.

Couple of questions:

1. How much hp/tq can the stock '99 Cobra motor handle?
2. What componets of the rotating assembly are forged vs. cast?
3. What is the stock fuel injector size?
4. Stock fuel pump flow rate?

Again, thanks for all the info!!!:nice:

I saw everything but the cooling system/heat exchanger on ebay for cheap a week or two ago. And you end up with a lighter cobra because of the alumium block, although the rotating assembly can't handle as much boost.

Problem is then you land up needing a built shorblock, which is seriously expensive using an aluminum block.
Especially since none of the internals are re-usable, where's if for some reason the 03/04 cobra engine needs to be re done, you can use the crank and rods, and save alot of money. Not to mention bolts for the aluminum block are more expensive.

Now, if you just drop in the 03/04 cobra engine, use older cobra harness and computer, you'd be done quick and easy. And you'd have a complete cobra engine to sell, along with a very expensive harness setup from the newer engine.

More out of pocket to begin with, but a nice savings in the end.

Man! I'm not so sure what I going to do now. I'm modding the Cobra for several reasons, the most mportant being that my wife wants the car to pull like my '05 and the second being that I want the car to be a little more fun to drive than it is right now, though, I barely drive the car. I'd prefer to spend big $$ on the '05 and and just do what is necessary to fullfill the number 1 & 2 reasons. I can drop a complete Vortech (non-intercooled/after-cooled) S-Trim in for around $3200 and that will get her up to around 400 rwhp or so and the Vortech kits are way easy to install (saves me time and stress). I haven't personally installed a Procharger or Paxton, though, I would assume the Paxton is just about the same as the Vortech.

Shoot. For a little more than the price of a KB, I could by one of the new BOSS 302 crate motors.....now there's a little something to think about.

If you can come up with the $6500-$9000 it costs to get a 03/04 cobra engine (depending on if it has the t56) that's the way to go.
If you stick with the 99 harness, you won't need the newer cluster. You'll just need to do some minor splicing and get a custom tune.

A used 99 dohc engine is probably worth $2500, then $500 for the trans, and the harness's and comp from the 03/04 cobran engine are worth at least $500.
IMO, that's better than racking your brain trying to piece together an 03 setup, on a mediocre shortblock.
If you goto the modular conversions section of modularfords.com, they have all the answers.

if you just want the seat of your pants feeling look into doing gears.
I'd at least look into putting the stock cobra setup even though you can't up the boost on it the way you can with the '03, '04 due to its heavier duty shortblock.
My Saleen runs 10 psi stock on the 2v. Your compression ratio is probably higher so do some research first.

wont need as much boost either as the car is 150 pounds lighter due to an aluminum motor....most mach guys run 6-8 psi

Allright, Ill let you have it from a fellow 99er. Only thing you got that is forged is the crank, everything else is brittle, but good enough for maybe 450hp.(but watch your rear end) Our block is better than the 03-04 cobras and most of the 01 cobras.

If you want more seat of the pants deffinately do gears. My suggestion is 4.30s if you are not putting a supercharger on.

Depending on your budget, you can get a centrifugal supercharger for 4k get 450 rwhp on 6-8psi and still run 4.10 gears. You're looking at a low 11 second car but dont expect your rear end to stay around long if you launch hard. Get some forged internals you can pump up the psi to 15 if you want.

Any questions just ask.

Just the information I was looking for. Thanks!

Ya ya,

Exactly what I said wayy earlier in the thread. Stick with the Vortech. It's the best set up for your money and you won't have to worry about much else unless you start seeing your wife rev the sombitch to 4000 rpm and dump the clutch everyday.:D
